Getting better slowly. I'm just hoping my voice still doesn't sound like crap tomorrow for the UNB-UdeM broadcast on Rogers TV.

Yes, I will be in the Super City for Christmas, and could probably use an escape from some potential drama. I'll send you a text when I'm in town.

I know in the women's volleyball the wild card goes to the conference with the national champions....not really sure how much sense that makes....

I surprised myself a bit with the degree of shuffling caused in what was a slightly abbreviated week of games.

First, the STU Pids were upgraded from D to C-. They have had a tough schedule. Everybody else in the AUS is either an A or a B. They also split a pair of games with UQTR in pre-season.

Second, Lethbridge and UQTR jump from C+ to B, which affects a lot of results in both of their conferences. Combined with a spate of losses by UBC, Moncton, Waterloo, and Carleton they also jump to the top of B level.

Otherwise, the top 5 stood pat, a few teams gained or lost a + sign, and St FX jumps ahead of Dalhousie with a head-to-head victory.

I hope to do a conference-by-conference breakdown over the break. Maybe even include a look ahead to see where the rankings might go. The big question is whether McGill can break through to A level. Lakehead and UQTR are finally putting together some wins. Lakehead's remaining schedule is tough enough that a good run could land them at A level. The Urban Cowboys could be there but that loss to RMC makes one shudder.

3-2-1 Point System

CIS STANDINGS ADJUSTED FOR 3-2-1 POINT SYSTEM

I admit that I was not a big fan of the shoot-out when it was introduced to the NHL. Especially after it had been tried and discontinued already in leagues like the MJHL and the original IHL. In recognition that a shoot-out loss was not a real loss, it was decided that a point should be awarded to the losing team for the tie they had earned. However, the corollary principle (that a win by shoot-out was not a real win) never made its way to the points formula.

In IIHF competition they have adopted the 3-2-1 point system whereby a regulation time win gives a team 3 points. In overtime or a shoot-out it is 2 points for the winner and 1 for the loser. I say: Good idea.

So how would that affect the CIS standings? I have compiled the results, and here they are, along with some observations on both the adjusted standings and also the GF/GA numbers:

CANADA WEST
Code:

GP W OW OL L GF GA PTS
Alberta 14 10 1 1 2 64 38 33
Manitoba 14 6 1 4 3 47 36 24
Saskatchewan 14 5 3 0 6 48 34 21
Calgary 14 3 4 2 5 36 36 19
Lethbridge 14 4 2 3 5 48 61 19
UBC 14 3 2 4 5 42 51 17
Regina 16 5 1 0 10 34 63 17
- Alberta and Manitoba are the only teams over .500 in regulation time
- Saskatchewan's big edge in GF/GA comes from two games (9-1 over Regina and 10-1 over Lethbridge), otherwise they are 29-32, i.e. -3
- the GAA of the top four is almost the same and then comes a HUGE gap
- can Lethbridge bridge the GAA gap with Bowles back in the 2nd half?
- can Saskatchewan stay unbeaten in OT/SO?

AUS
Code:

GP W OW OL L GF GA PTS
UNB 15 11 0 0 4 61 27 33
Saint Mary's 15 9 1 1 4 61 37 30
UPEI 15 8 1 2 4 64 49 28
StFX 15 7 1 1 6 53 54 24
Acadia 15 7 0 2 6 52 55 23
Dalhousie 15 2 6 0 7 44 57 18
Moncton 15 4 1 2 8 46 57 16
St. Thomas 15 1 1 3 10 38 83 8
- Dalhousie is the CIS's biggest loser in the adjusted standings
- Dalhousie is -13 in GF/GA
- the AUS has the lowest ratio of OT games
- the top 3 have an even bigger gap between themselves and the rest in the GF/GA ratio
- the AUS is higher scoring than the CW this year, in goals-per-game the Evil Monkeys are still 1st but then UNB, SMU, UPEI, StFX, and Acadia are all ahead of the rest of the CW
- only UNB and SMU have a GAA under 3.00

OUA – East Division
Code:

GP W OW OL L GF GA PTS
McGill 18 14 2 2 0 103 44 48
UQTR 17 8 4 0 5 70 56 32
Carleton 17 9 1 2 5 59 43 31
Nipissing 17 8 0 3 6 53 62 27
Concordia 16 8 1 0 7 65 74 26
Ottawa 17 5 4 2 6 68 68 25
Ryerson 17 5 1 0 11 48 73 17
Toronto 16 1 4 3 8 43 63 14
Queen's 15 0 5 2 8 53 73 12
RMC 16 0 1 1 14 38 87 3
- the OUA-E had a big edge in head-to-head OT games with the OUA-W
in total the division is 23-15 in OT games
- UQTR, Ottawa, Toronto, and Queen's are 4 of the CIS's top 7 biggest losers under the 3-2-1 point system
- only 3 of 10 teams have outscored their opponents

OUA - West Division
Code:

GP W OW OL L GF GA PTS
W. Ontario 16 12 1 3 0 79 42 41
Lakehead 16 9 2 1 4 81 46 32
Laurier 17 9 0 4 4 60 48 31
Waterloo 17 7 4 0 6 58 58 29
Guelph 16 7 1 2 6 60 55 25
Brock 17 5 2 5 5 52 48 24
Windsor 17 6 1 3 7 47 47 23
UOIT 17 3 3 4 7 51 72 19
York 17 5 0 0 12 35 64 15
- Laurier's 0-4 in OT makes them the CIS's unluckiest OT team (Manitoba and Brock are right behind them)
- when one considers the points adjustments and the GF/GA ratios, Waterloo gets knocked down as much as anybody in the CIS (basically tied with Dalhousie)
- the OUA is even higher scoring than the AUS, with 9 of the top 15 teams in goals per game (and 5 from OUA-E)

At the top, UNB's sweep combined with Alberta's win-sol with UBC leaves the two teams in a dead-heat for top spot.

For the A- teams, UPEI beat Dal twice (once in exhibition) and were skunked by STU and Acadia. So they slip behind Manitoba, winners of 2 games over Lakehead.

In the B+, McGill did get hammered by UNB. But I get a sense that may happen to a lot of good teams in coming weeks. St FX gets credit for beating them in OT and two more conference wins. Otherwise, Calgary beat Lethbridge twice (once in exhibition) and Saskatchewan beat Regina twice. Put it all together and 6-9 are basically a dead heat with none able to stake claim to being at A level just yet.

At the bottom of B+, the Urban Cowboys lost to Laurier so they stay put. But Dal, Acadia, and Lakehead could be losing their + signs.

At the B level, UBC could be making a move if it weren't for their 1-3-4 record against B teams. They are an enigmatic team this year. Waterloo's loss to York is the last straw. They are now reclassified as C+.

Laurier's wins finally got them out of C+ and into the B level, where I expected they would be. This status change affected a lot of results in the OUA and those changes are reflected in the table. The rest of the C+ teams are in a dead heat.

The C teams shuffled a bit. UOIT could be making a claim to add a + sign. They have shown signs before, only to slide back. Early wins over UWO and Laurier were followed by a 4 game losing streak. They now have a 3 game winning streak. So I'll be checking in on them. There is not much to chose between the rest.

St. Thomas got a boost at C- due to win over UPEI. And, who knows, if RMC can win a few more maybe the D category will again be empty.

And, as a bonus feature, here are the results for all B+ and higher teams against A and B opponents from throughout the CIS:

`---------------------------------------------------------

At the top, Alberta's back-to-back splits against non-playoff teams moves them into #2 and allows UNB to jump to #1. The rest of the CW also split so it was a stand-pat weekend for them.

The AUS had a few twists after a few weeks of growing predictability. SMU could have jumped from A- to A if they beat Acadia. UPEI was on their way out of A- after losing badly to STU (and after having done so in a non-conference holiday game) but hung on with an OTL against UNB. Dal had a nice win over St FX but still lost their +. That's what four straight 4 and 5 goal losses will do. And Moncton needs to pick it up if they want to stay in B level. Their win over STU broke an 8 game losing streak.

Not much happened in the OUA East to alter things. Some might want to see Nipissing bumped into B level since they are on a 6 game winning streak. However, their last 4 wins come over Ryerson and RMC. They have two more games left against RMC, three with Toronto, and two with Queen's. They could run the table and still not budge!

In the OUA West, Waterloo gets back to B level after just getting bumped out last week. A little tough love from the OHT34 can really turn a program around! Lakehead dropped their + after being swept by the Urban Cowboys. Lakehead, Laurier, and Waterloo could all be jumbled in coming weeks. They all play primarily C teams to close (Lakehead and Waterloo finish against each other with a double-header and Laurier has one left with the Urban Cowboys).

One final note about UQTR and Lakehead. They are two OUA teams likely to be ranked in the top 10 in the official CIS poll. They both had horrible starts then pulled it together. However, recent results would indicate that they are both way more in-place at B level than at B+ level. Since Christmas, UQTR has close wins over Queen's and Concordia and were stomped by Ottawa. After being easily swept by Manitoba, Lakehead was convincingly swept by the Urban Cowboys.

I note that Carleton and Nipissing are very close at the edge of B- and C+. The difference now is that the Nippers have had so many games against RMC. Also, there is now a B- level.

I am replacing the usual commentary with a “who's hot, who's not” segment.

AUS:

Hot:
UNB 7-0-0; Acadia 3-0-0; UPEI 2-0-0

Not:
St Mary's, St F-X, St Thomas 0-3-0

Canada West:

Hot:
Calgary, Saskatchewan, UBC 4-1-0; Manitoba 3-1-0

Not:
Alberta 0-3-0, Regina 0-3-1

OUA – East:

Hot:
McGill 7-0-0; Nipissing 8-1-0; Queen's and Toronto 3-0-0; Concordia 3-1-0

Not:
RMC 0-6-0; Ryerson 0-3-0; Ottawa 1-4-1

OUA – West:

Hot:
Windsor 4-0-0; W. Ontario 3-0-1; Waterloo 3-1-0

Not:
Laurier 0-2-1; Lakehead, Guelph, and UOIT 1-3-0

Good job, Hollywood. I find it a bit interesting that the "B" rating teams all have losing records (more losses than wins) in the "Total" column. Wins are hard to come by. It really shows how strong B+ and better teams are compared to the rest of the pack.

I had thought by now that UNB and Alberta would be A+ (like they were last year) and then the A- and B+ teams would be A and A-. However, while UNB is almost A+ in my books, Alberta is going nowhere. And the B+ teams are tough to move because if you move one you have to move them all. McGill lost on a shoot-out to StFX, and the rest are basically a weekend away from changing places.

Any sort of system with some subjectivity has its challenges. Minor really. I suppose you could automatically have the top team(s) as A+ to start the scale, and worst teams as an F (or D) to finish the scale. It might offer a bit more separation, but I'm sure it would create new problems. End of the day, it'll all sort itself out eventually.

McGill should be higher, at least in front of St.Marys. I think you're not giving them enough credit because they're playing in the OUA, but they are one hell of a team. Losing to St.Fx in exhibition hockey shouldn't even be a factor. They're still undefeated in regular time afterall.

Dutch, the fact that they play in the OUA is the problem! They really don't get to play consistently stong competition.

They ventured out to play two games against AUS teams and the results pretty well suggest that McGill would be a middle of the pack (3-6) team in the AUS. I'm giving them credit as a very good team but
there are a lot of very strong teams in the AUS who would probably be OUA powerhouses.

It will be up to McGill to Prove Critics wrong come CIS Championchip time, its the only way they will gather some more respect to pull off a victory or two againts Canada West or AUS Competition.

Theyve been great in the OUA very dominant blowing out teams, but they are no where near the Team that St Marys is, they would be hard pressed to steal a game from SMU in a best of 7 series, even if it was played 10 times over.

They went to St FX and trailed by 3 goals in the third, the Xmen let off the gas a little bit. When I saw McGill Play UNB after Xmas, I was shocked by how weak they looked, I expected alot more, in fact I expected a close game. Ive seen every game at UNB this year, and Mcgill looked like the weakest team bar none. Im willing to bet St Thomas would play a highly competitive best of 7 vs McGill and would have a good chance to come out on top. McGill didnt come close to seeing UNB's Best Team, and it was still a very easy 7-1 game, with McGills only goal coming with their player into the UNB Goalie and pushing both him and the puck into the net

The players scratched from the UNB lineup that night vs McGill. D-Ben Shutron, D-Luke Gallant, D-Josh Kidd, F-Jeff Lee, F-Taylor Proceshyn, F -Daine Todd. Those players absent will devastate any team, and once the score was out of hand, the Ice Time for the UNB top 2 lines, was very little. This is just to say the score of the game could have been scary, for a team, who is beating teams in the OUA by wide margins, who are averaging like what 6 goals a game scored.

It is not just that McGill plays in the OUA. They have had a weak schedule even by OUA standards. Here's a few facts:

- Against the OUA West they beat York 3-2, lost to Brock 3-2 in OT, and beat Guelph 5-4 in OT. Those teams are currently seeded to either miss the playoffs or lose the 1st round.

- Their toughest divisional opponents are UQTR, Carleton, and Nipissing, none of whom strike anybody as national contenders.

- UQTR did go 3-0 against the OUA West, but those were 5-4 in OT and 3-2 in SO against Windsor and 5-4 in OT against Guelph. They were 2-3 against the AUS, including a split with St. Thomas.

- Carleton beat UOIT 5-3, lost to Brock 4-2, and beat York 8-0. They also won non-conference games against Waterloo 6-2 and Guelph 3-2 in OT after Christmas.

- Nipissing lost 10-1 and 4-3 to Lakehead then split with Windsor, losing 5-1 and winning 2-1.

- Applying the foregoing to those 3 divisional opponents, Carleton and UQTR would be hard-pressed to finish top 4 in the OUA West, and Nipissing would be hard-pressed to finish top 8.

Overall, McGill might be fabulous. But they have few results of relevance against anybody decent. As a result, we have to look hard at their OTL against StFX and whipping at the hands of UNB. I have them lumped in with some pretty good teams and simply cannot justify rating them any higher.

Hollywood3, you do a great job! Your rankings and analysis have a great deal more credibility than the CIS Top 10 which is truly unfortunate! when you think about it.

The big change this week was the elimination of the B+ category as those teams moved into A. There has been a general tightening of the races in the CW and AUS. I had thought there would be more A level teams like last year but could never fully justify it before now.

The B teams are not an immediate candidate for promotion. Their records are somewhat deceptive. In goals for and against, Lethbridge is -14, UBC -18, Moncton -19, and Dalhousie -32.

I am not totally sold on Nipissing as a B level team. But they are 4-1-1 against B- teams.

I am replacing the usual commentary with a “who's hot, who's not” segment.

AUS:
  • Hot:
    UNB 9-0-0; St F-X 3-0-0; Moncton 3-0-0; Acadia 4-1-0

    Not:
    St Thomas 1-7-2; St Mary's 1-5-0; Dalhousie 0-3-0

Canada West:
  • Hot:
    Saskatchewan 6-1-0; Manitoba 3-1-0

    Not:
    Alberta 0-3-0

OUA – East:
  • Hot:
    Nipissing 10-1-0; McGill 8-1-0; Carleton 3-0-0

    Not:
    Ryerson 1-4-0; Ottawa 1-4-0

OUA – West:
  • Hot:
    W. Ontario 5-0-1; Brock 3-0-0

    Not:
    Lakehead 1-4-1

Holly-woody, if Manitoba makes it to the University Cup and they have a good chance at that, realizing you have family, any chance you would make the trip to Freddy Beach for the Nationals? Would theyre be any crew of Bison fans that would make the trek? Did you come to Fredericton before when the Bisons came here a couple years in a row over xmas.

I have never been to Fredericton and doubt I will make it this year. I doubt that there will be a last-minute travel group formed due to distance and cost. Not to mention a possible lack of tickets. I was in New Brunswick once, many years ago, in the Chatham Nelson-Miramichi area.

The host committee is mandated to hold back some tickets (25-50?) for each team at the University Cup. As I understand it, in 2003 and 2004 it was these leftovers that were sold to walk-ups when the event was "sold out" in Fredericton.

There was a lot of shuffling within the A level since Manitoba lost twice to Calgary, UPEI continue a slide, and McGill and the Urban Cowboys both suffered losses to lower teams.

The only team to switch letter grades was Waterloo, yet again, who drop from the Bs to the Cs where they sit in a big pile of OUA West teams.

I continue the “who's hot, who's not” segment:

AUS:
  • Hot:
    UNB 10-1-0; Acadia 6-1-0; Saint Mary's 3-0-0; St F-X 4-1-0; Moncton 4-1-0

    Not:
    St Thomas 1-9-2; Dalhousie 1-4-0; UPEI 0-4-0
Canada West:
  • Hot:
    Saskatchewan 8-1-0

    Not:
    UBC 0-4-0; Regina 1-5-2

OUA – East:
  • Hot:
    Carleton 5-0-0; Nipissing 4-1-0

    Not:
    Ryerson 1-5-1; Ottawa 1-5-0

OUA – West:
  • Hot:
    Guelph 4-0-0; UOIT 3-0-0; Brock 4-1-0

    Not:
    Waterloo 0-3-1; Windsor 0-3-1

Official Hollywood Top 34 - #16

February 13, 2011

THE OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 34 ~ 2010-11

The OUA and AUS have now concluded their regular seasons in time for THE OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 34 version #16. and Yet the CW has two weeks left. This presents a dilemma. Last year the official rankings closed once the OUA and AUS were in playoffs so that they gave StFX a boost ahead of Manitoba (after they beat UNB) but then never gave Manitoba a boost after beating Sask. This poll will therefore conclude the rankings of OUA and AUS teams. They will only move if a CW team either passes them or falls behind them. Here are the links:Here are last week's results:
