For every Carter Ashton you have that can make a jump to the NHL in two years, you have an Alex Killorn who can make the jump in about five. Hynes fits that latter category, certainly.

Oh I agree. Thing is he will redeclare himself eligable in the next draft soon. We can just step around that and offer him a contract. If he has the potential wouldn't it be worth it?
I agree, I dont know much about him either. I think the biggest factor against him though is his size. Hes a small guy, then again he could also be one of those guys that has a late growth spurt. Either way, if he tears it up in the prospect tournament then I would love to see him signed. It never hurts having a filled pipeline.
Yzerman must be impressed with him so far since he's given him a second invitation to come back and play. I think Yzerman will sign him if he has a good tournament.
So the choices are A: Sign him if he has a good tourney or B: let him redeclare for the draft and watch him through the year and he is legit hope no one else grabs him in the draft.
Remember St. Louis was undrafted as too small, then released by Calgary, then signed a two-year deal with Tampa Bay in July of 2000 at slightly more than the NHL minimum. If he he turns out half as good at #26 it should be a good signing.

The odds he becomes half as good as Marty are probably the same as Yzerman retiring and Lawton being re-hired. Nothing against Hynes but Marty succeeds in spite of his size, there are thousands of other short hockey players who don't.

As long as he's still draft eligible, he can't be signed. (by the Lightning anyway)
There is a small window where an undrafted free agent can sign with an NHL club. Dont know when the window ends. I just have a funny feeling about Hynes. I think he will have a huge season next year, I'd rather sign him now instead of watching another team nab him in the 1st round when we could of had him for free.

You're right, I misread the CBA. Their use of qualifiers is killing me. It's a bad idea to mix together legalize and time constraints.
Quote:
10.1(d) Any Player not eligible for claim in any future Entry Draft...shall be UFA. Further, any player eligible for claim, but who was unclaimed, shall be subject to the provisions of 8.9(b)
8.9(ii) Eligibility for Play in the League
No player shall be eligible for play in the league unless he:
(b) had been eligible for claim in the last entry draft. but was unclaimed, and:
(i) had played hockey in NA the prior season and was under the age of 20 at the time of the last Entry Draft, and signed an SPC...between the conclusion of the Entry Draft and commencement of the Major Juniors season (except if they signed a try-out...shall be the commencement of the NHL season.)
Everything is written in terms of 'cannot', which is then remedied by the use of 'unless' (unless you cannot do something) The double negatives add up quickly.
It also means I was wrong about most the other young players who have been invited (on the Traverse City thread). It didn't make a lot of sense to me that SFY would invite players he couldn't get for sure, but now I see where I made the error.

At 3:30, the Lightning prospects kick off their tournament against the Blues. We're wearing white tonight, a "road" game.
From what I'm seeing, it's not on the NHL network. Can't find any alternatives online either, so I'm inclined to think that either the NHL network isn't listing it, or there isn't tv coverage.
For comparison sake, what's on the NHL network at 3:30? "2009 Pokerstars NHL Charity Shootout Show # 4"

Early on too:
1st period
St. Louis - Cody Beach - (Fighting Major), 5 min, 2:55
Tampa Bay - Teigan Zahn - (Fighting Major), 5 min, 2:55
Even though it's a rookie camp, and I've seen fights, and known of their existence for as long as I've followed hockey, they continue to surprise me. Their rage could not be contained.
2nd period was anarchy:
Tampa Bay - Geofrrey Schemitsch - (Holding), 2 min, 6:06
St. Louis - Brett Sonne - (Hooking), 2 min, 9:40
St. Louis - Philip McRae - (Tripping), 2 min, 9:55
Tampa Bay - Carter Ashton - (Holding), 2 min, 11:46
Tampa Bay - Radko Gudas - (Roughing), 2 min, 13:25
St. Louis - Cody Beach - (Roughing), 2 min, 15:12
Tampa Bay - Brock Beukeboom - (Roughing), 2 min, 15:12
St. Louis - Michael DOrazio - (Hooking), 2 min, 19:18
Tampa Bay - Mitch Fadden - (Tripping), 2 min, 19:59

Seems like the first line of Ashton-Wright-Connolly was the only one to make things happen. They scored the 2 only goals and had half of the teams shots.
