Me too. I don't like the look of the interface but I'm sure some do - that being said the phone looks nice and W7 accomplishes the same things as say my iPhone 4 would...

I rarely replace my phones (before iPhone 4 was a flip phone and before that landlines) so we'll see but I'm definitely keeping an open mind with regards to Windows phones. The integration with Xbox live and other things is just an added bonus.

My friend in NYC will be sending me a Dell Venue Pro to play around with in a few weeks.

I can't wait.

If anyone can make it work it's Microsoft, that's for sure.

It may be too late. What incentive do carriers have to carry phones they can't mess with like Android in order to differentiate?

Played with the 710. At the price Rogers is selling it, it's a good deal. Everything is smooth. Except on the apps department, this phone will kill his competitors at the same range (LG Phoenix, Samsung Galaxy Q and Sony Xperia Mini).

They don't. They don't want Android to go away, they love having such an iron grip on consumers that they can't get with the iPhone or WP7.

As an aside, it's funny that the open source platform ends up being the least empowering.

So I have some decisions to make. I'm currently using an iPhone 3G (my Bold 9700 crapped out). My upgrade isn't until August, but I can pay $15 per month til August (so $90) and can upgrade to any phone I like, but would be signing a new 3-year contract in the process. With the S2 LTE priced at $99 right now, after taxes and activation I'd be looking at $246 and change.

Here's how Windows comes into the picture...

I can buy a Lumia 710 out right for $254.99 + HST, could likely get the activation fee since I know the store manager, and have a new phone without re-signing.

I realize the 900 is only a few months away. However, I'm at the point where I'm just sick and tired of having a slow phone. 30 seconds to open up apps like facebook, twitter and TSN? C'mon man!

Looking at the specs side by side, I'll be giving up LTE, screen size, and a front facing camera, but other than that. I like what the 710 has to offer, and gives me what I'm looking for.

If performance is all you care about the 710 should be fine.

You just answered your question. Get the 710.

Really wish Microsoft had done something bold and called WP7 "Metro".

There is next to no similarity (besides upcoming code sharing in Apollo) between Windows and Windows Phone.

On a side note, have you guys tried the web-based WP7 demo? Pretty sick!

Windows 8 is going to be sexy. I'll hopefully get a second generation Windows tablet once they come out. Cannot wait for that.

Windows 8 will look like that on the desktop too? I personally don't like the look but it stands out and I guess it appeals to people... smart move on their part to be visually different from the competitors.

From what I understand the "Metro UI" overlay can be turned off.

To add to this, Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 will have the same Kernel, so apps can work on both OS's.

I'm praying that Verizon picks up the WP8 phones. My contract ends in July, and I'd rather not jump ship to AT&T...

Yes. This is going to make a tremendous impact as the apps ought to come rapidly at that point.

Is there any details on how this is done? To my knowledge ARM and x86/x64 compiled code is vastly different. Windows 8 on desktops/laptops will most likely be running on x68/x64 while WP8 will be most likely be running on ARM.

I'm not sure how the kernel has any impact on apps being cross compatible. When I was doing my embedded systems class we had to specifically use ARM versions of Linux (which has the same Kernel as x86 linux) on our TI OMAP Beagle boards and had to compile our C programs in an ARM compiler so I'm interested to see how they bridged that segregation.

I'm not really sure, I'm just spitting out **** I've read elsewhere.

I did read that Windows 8 does support ARM, so maybe the synergy is more for their upcoming tablet line?
