#88 for Nolan and Sakic

Does anyone know why Joe Sakic and Owen Nolan wore #88 in their first year with Quebec. I know Nolan wore it for a couple of games and Sakic wore #8 and #88 his first year with the Nordiques.

Remember when Nolan called his shot against Hasek in the allstar game? That was great. And the glowing puck just made it better.

Sakic - maybe his first PRO year? (1988/1989)
Nolan - maybe his first junior year? (1988/1989)

Anyone find it ironic since they were both still in Quebec in 1991 when they drafted, you know?

Sakic wore 88 his rookie year because Alain Cote had 19. Cote retired the summer of 1989, so Sakic was able to have 19.

Not sure about Nolan though.

It was a tribute to OHA scoring sensation Eric Lindros

Sakic wore it as a rookie in 1988-89, and Lindros was drafted in 1991. So it wasn't that.

At first glance, I thought this thread was going to be about how Sakic and Nolan handled the Lindros situation, and whether there was any bad blood.

Pretty sure Sakic wore 88 for his draft year. As for the number 8, I have no idea.
