Scott Walker hired as new head coach for the Guelph Storm

(putting it here since he's a former Cap)

I assume that means he won't be playing in the Dec 31 alum game after all. Congrats to him/good luck in his new career.

Bruce would have scratched him for Flash until the 7th alumni game anyway.

Do we have any direction at all on Tom Poti's latest injury? I saw that he took a stick to the face. They said he might return. He didnt. Then he didnt play vs Carolina with Sloan escaping IR.

Did he break something?

Kolbe on NHL Live. Do the Caps need a goalie?
Kolbe: The Caps have their goalies. They like their three young goalies......If the Caps traded for a goalie I wouldnt be surprised.

What??

Do the Caps want Marty Broduer? Oh, if the he were dangled and the price was right I am sure that George McPhee would have his ears open.

What?

No surprise. Steve Kolbe is an idiot.

A few games ago, I was out on the concourse at Verizon during play, so they had the radio feed playing. I hear a happily excited "SCORE!!!" from Kolbe, but wasn't in view of a television. Naturally, since Kolbe sounded so excited, I assumed the Caps scored. Nope, it was the other team.

I know he's been around forever, and has been a good servant of the club, but the guy is terrible at his job. Send him to the minors and bring up Walton.

Edit: Or here's an idea: There's a very experienced hockey play-by-play guy that lives in the area for at least 6 months a year doing the O's broadcasts on MASN. Go get Gary Thorne.

Walton and Thorne probably both make way more than Kolbe though. Doubt the team/station would spend on a quality radio announcer.

on multiple occasions i have had to travel home from the race track across the southeast on a caps game night. this means getting kolbe, sometimes fading in and out, to find out whats up with the game.

one game on three different occasions kolbe is yammering on about one stat or story or show prep thing when he all of a sudden says "shot scooorreeeeeee!!". I am like...what?? who???? where???? which FREAKING TEAM!!!!!

i am a radio station program director by trade. creating radio product is my area of expertise. not doing the play by play of the hockey game while the play is on AND THE PUCK is in a scoring zone is a basic mistake.

please, give the guy a little guidance. tell him the homework stories and stats are not as important as the game.

at this point it might be better if they just ran the tv audio.

What I've found interesting is when I'm leaving the game I'll have the post game show on the radio, and they replay the highlights of the goals. The way he describes most of them has almost no bearing on how I remember the play developing. As you said, it's like he's going on and on about something and then suddenly "scooooore"....and it's like well where did they shoot it from, the other end of the ice? That's the last time I had any idea where the puck actually was. Large chunks of the game seemingly go missing.

And it's just mind-boggling to me that this guy has over 1000 freaking games worth of experience. You'd think he's only been around for a year or two, considering his lack of ability.

reality check. much of that time the caps radio was getting bounced around dc am radio stations where most couldnt be heard in the entire metro. he was very likely working for cheap.

he makes ahl money if that where the hershey guy makes nhl money. if i remember the nhl network show on him when they did all the nhl radio voices, the caps stuff was not even his primary source of income. its like part time and he lives all the way in frederick.

Katie Carrera and Corey Masisak offhandedly mention that the games Perreault and Poti have missed are partially due to concussions.

Schultz picks up the puck in his own zone and passes it to Green. In their last 25 games on the 3rd of the month, the Capitals are 12-10-SCOREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Ovechkin SCORED THE goal from BACKstrom who HAD ducked behind the net and slid the backhand out in front to the GREAT 8.

the csn thing was likely a part time job. the nhl.com job is fulltime, but the cost of living is going to press on that nhl.com salary

Friedman's column/30 thoughts this week (always) is pretty awesome. Focuses on the caps.
