Luoma to Sweden

Finnish defenseman Mikko Luoma, soon to be 28, has signed with MIF Redhawks in the SEL.

Luoma played 3 games with the Edmonton Oilers this season adding an assist. He spent the rest of the season playing for the Toronto Roadrunners of the AHL. In 65 AHL-games Luoma scored 4 goals and registered 22 assists.

He has earlier in his career represented JYP and Tappara in the Finnish SM-Liiga and MIF's director Stefan Krüeger is very excited about the signing:

- We are very proud to present Mikko for next season. He is among the very best defensemen in elitserien, Krüeger says in a press release.

Does this mean the Oilers don't continue to hold rights on him? Is he out of NA for good? How does this work?

They still have his NHL rights, but I wouldn't count on seeing him over here again. Kind of like Haakana, I guess.

That's too bad - I liked Mikko.... I think he could have ended up a decent third pairing blueliner. It's not a big loss... but still unfortunate.

He did not look out of place here in the 3 games he played, and his one assist was a blueline pinch followed by a nice backhand pass to Izzy who then scored a goal with 1.1 seconds to tie Minny. (a very nice play).

Either Oilers showed no further interest in him, or his agent was informed that there would be no room on the blueline next season (Lynch, Woywitka, Semenov...). If I was him I would choose my home countrys league (where he's recognized) over the AHL anyday if I was in his position.

And the money he'll make over there will probably be a lot better than his AHL salary.

Not to mention he could be getting a leg up on the guys who will be flocking to europe this summer in case of a lockout.
