Danger; beware overhyping I.E. Del Zotto for Calder, ect.

He has had a nice pro start here but calling him the "future face of the franchise" is the kind of thing that leads to disappointment.

Good article, but man that whole "Mr." thing was so annoying. What was the point of that?

Yeah, definite 'Mr' overload there. Nice read though.

Really cool tidbits about his dad.

Must be unreal to be a dad seeing your son do what you only dreamed about especially so in this circumstance.

hat trick for my mom, fight for dad ?

Wall Street Journal does that for everything. It was just as bad referring to Mr. Chamberlian in an article the other day about how Joba is worthless now.

"He's like a Mark Messier, guys who aren't the most skillful but are the most important cogs for good teams, who play entire shifts goal line to goal line and block shots, win draws and are incredibly reliable," said Tom Ward, his high-school coach.

Is there some other Mark Messier I'm not aware of?

I don't see what he said wrong. Messier was not one of the most skilled players of his generation.

I completely disagree.....you don't become the second highest scorer in NHL history without a ton of skill..

Messier was absolutely one of the most skilled players to ever play this game. People forget how great a shot he had, not only accurate but powerful.. He was a GREAT skater, tough player (checks and fights) and great leader. All of that is skill.

To say he was not one of the most skilled players of his generation is not only an insult to him but also the players he played against.

You compare Messier to Kurri, gretz, I guess you could say that.

But compared to most NHLers he still had a well above average skill set.

You become the second highest scoring player because you play a long time and compile points. But that's not an indication of skill. And I'm not saying that Messier wasn't skilled — I'm saying compared to some of his contemporaries, he wasn't the most skillful guy.

I generally respect your posts but this one i cannot take seriously.

You don't last in a professional league long enough to become a top scorer let alone #2 if you don't have a ton of skill.

Not to mention, a bunch of guys have had lengthy careers and not come NEAR the numbers Mess had.

And who are the contemporaries your comparing him to? Gretzky, Lemiuex, Kurri etc....those guys are all great players.....compared to the average player in the NHL, Messier was greatly skilled.

Dave Andreychuk scored over 600 goals. Was he one of the most skilled player of his time? What about Mike Bossy? What about Kevin Stevens?

I'm not saying he wasn't skilled. I'm saying his success resulted from hard work and smarts mores so than just pure talent. That's not a knock on him. He wasn't the most talented player on those Oiler teams (not compared to Gretz, Kurri, Coffey) He wasn't as skilled as Mario.

On the flip side, there have been a ton of skillful guys who never were as successful as Messier.

It's not a knock on the guy. To me, if anything, it's a greater compliment.

Agree with SBOB.

Messier came into the league with a lot of raw talent, and developed his skills over time but relied on his smarts, toughness, passion, leadership, and will to win more than pure skill. Guys like Bure, Mogilny, Yzerman, Coffey, Jagr, Lemieux, etc... they had supreme skill. Mess never danced around defenseman like those guys did, he plowed through them and use his hard shot. He was an all around player but if you listed the top 100 most skilled players in NHL history Mess might not even make that list.

Here's to Stepan having a huge game this Friday. I can't imagine what that would be like as a parent in the stands.

I'll never forget Al Trautwig in the seats with Callahan's father and he asked what it was like to see your son out on the ice here at MSG, and Cally's dad choked up a bit in trying to reply. I swear I almost choked up with him!

Go get em Friday Stepan!!!

It was only a matter of time before something got him crying again anyway.

Especially when you almost reached the Rangers yourself and haven't been back since. That going to be really emotional for Brad Stepan

agree with Sbob....Messier won/scored based on hard work, determination, and raw physical power...

I agree w/ the article. Stepan is going to be a legit captain of this team in the near future.

Highly doubtful....Cally is not captain material.....he is A material.

Stepan is certainly a potential future captain.....I think the other possibilities are Dubi and possibly Staal although i generally don't like giving the C to a D-Man
