Jordan Staal's value now proven

I know its early, but for i hope all the Staal haters out there now realize just how important to this team he is. The Staal/Cooke/Kennedy line does a tremendous job at cycling, holding the puck and tiring out the other team. Staal increases our puck possesion by a lot. Personally, i find Matt Cooke is not the same player without Staal. Of course theres also the Defensive presense missing as well.

Again, i know its only been 3 games, i watched all 3 and to ME, the biggest missing piece has been Staal. (and of course, the powerplay!!)

Staal being out made Sid and Geno under perform, caused injuries to two of our top-4 defensemen, made Bylsma continue to make idiotic decisions and throw lines around like he's playing Yahtzee, and made the entire team look lazy and disinterested for a large portion of the games played?

Damn, he's a bargain at $4M.

Is it Staal himself? Or is it having one of Sid, Malkin or Staal out on the ice for the entire game.

I'm not that upset by Malkin moving to wing but it sure was nice having one of those three controling the middle of the ice for almost the entire game.

PK is missing him bad as well. I have notice Adams has not done well in that aspect. He is pretty important player but these losses have more to do with the combination of injuries to key players and some shaky goaltending.

I think his value has been proven here for quite a long while. It's those fanbases from 29 other teams that didn't realize it.

All jokes aside, we really are missing the shifts where Staal just imposes his size, strength, and smarts on the other team in their end for the whole shift, the big PK minutes, and the extra scoring touch.

He's an integral part of this team.

Agreed. I have always said. When Sid is out we still have Geno. When Geno is out we still have Sid. We are not as potent...but still have an all world superstar to fall back on. When Staal is out we have nothing to replace what he does.

Man I miss seeing him dominate the boards already. Especially since Sid isn't doing it night in and out like years past.

It didn't take a few bad games to make any sane person realize the Pens are better with Jordan Staal.

He's the absolute best third line center in hockey. He'll be good on the second line when he gets back.

I realize its only been 4 games, and most of the posters on here realize Staals value, but you don't understand how many people around my everyday life tell me "the Pens need to trade Staal for a scoring winger" and "too bad you didnt take Backstrom, Kessel or Toews at the draft" and it gets frustrating. Michalek was only injured late in the NJ game, so we couldnt blame the "D" up to that point. Bylsma's line juggling and Fleury havent helped no doubt, but Staal's true value is sure showing at the moment IMO.

Staal has always been seen as majorly important by this fanbase. And rightfully so... it's just HFBoards posters from other teams thinking he's as overrated as they come. But he's the "Perfect" Dan Bylsma player too... fits this system the best out of possibly anybody else on the team.

He cannot come back any sooner... we really need him. But I'd rather have a 100% Jordan Staal, so don't want to rush him either.

I love Staal and think he's valuable to this team but this 1-3 start doesn't prove anything.

...it does however prove Arron Asham's value to the team.

Any player that makes 7% of the salary cap is of significant importance. When you're missing 3 players that consume 20% of the salary cap, you're not expected to win every single game.

I don't think so. The PK was really solid until the Toronto game - where two of our best three PK'ing defenders were out and Fleury was save repellent.

In general it is hard to point to Staal's absence being that big of a deal when the third line has been as solid as it has for us. That's the line that has been scoring for us ES and it has been very solid defensively also.

Obviously getting Staal back will improve the team, but this thread is a giant reach.

Hey lurker Barnaby: did you watch the Pens at all last year during the periods of suckitude (or the year before)? Jordan Staal was in that lineup the entire time. I like Jordan Staal and he IS important, but he's not the game changer you're implying, especially when the rest of the team is either banged up or mailing it in, and the coach is being anti-smart.

I think we are seeing where Staal's hidden value is. It's not about what he does, but about what he allows Sid and Geno not to do.

Yes this injury has lingered long enough. Its easy to get fustrated with them losing and want some of these guys back as soon as possible but its not whats best long term.

Pretty sure he proved how valuable he was when he was injured during the playoffs. The Pens are not the same team at all without him there to back up Sid and Geno.

The thing that I'm noticing the most is that while Staal is out, it really demolishes any scoring depth that we already don't have.

Bylsma's patented throw Geno and Sid out at the same time is immediately followed up by absolutely no scoring threat for the next 3 minutes.

I am a longtime lurker, im a pens fan all the way back to 1990, i used to log on the Igloo report for my Pens news! I do remember the times the past two years when the team has slumped, and that can be blamed on a number of reasons. I'm not pin-pointing the bad start to Staal missing completely, what i'm saying is the first 4 games (only watched 3), the Pens style of play is even different with him out. I cant remember Cooke having the puck on his stick for more than 3 seconds, but with Staal, they cycle and control....His presence missing is huge and glaring right now, IMO
