Paul Martin Appreciation Thread

Amidst a rocky start to the season that has been riddled with soft goals, unfortunate injuries, and some rather bizarre coaching decisions, there has still been one very noteworthy bright spot to focus on: PAUL Fkin' MARTIN!

Gotta say, I was kinda on the fence as to just how good this guy would be, and if he would be worth the 5 million + that we're paying him. Needless to say though, he's made me a believer from the get-go. His puck-handling and vision are second to none, and it's further complimented by solid overall defensive play.

Don't wanna get too far ahead of myself, but if he keeps up this level of play, then Sarge will quickly become a distant memory (if he hasn't already that is ).

Edit: Just noticed that there was an older thread already started in his honor. Feel free to lock this one

Agreed he has been very solid so far. Should only get better when we have a fully healthy team around him.

Guy is a brick wall. The game against the Leafs everytime Kessel touched the ice Martin was on and sent him packing everytime he came into the zone. Did the same with Kolvachuk with the Devils.

He is very quickly becoming one of my favorite Pens of all time and I have been a fan since 1993. As of now he is doing Mullens #7 justice.

I've had $150 dollars in gift cards to nhl.com, and Paul Martin just won my vote for next jersey to buy.

It's nice to have an exciting defenseman to watch. He plays like he really, really enjoys the game. Maybe it's just because he left the Devils' system and is free to roam.

It's only been 4 games for him on a new team and he hasn't been awesome. He sucks. Trade Martin!

He's doing exactly what I thought he would be. People were way too quick to look at his stats when judging how offensively competent he was, but failed to realize, he never played on a New Jersey team that had anywhere close to the offensive power we had, or the system that allowed him to fully take advantage of what he could do with the puck.

I don't think 45-50 points are out of the question.

I'm becoming a big fan too, but before we pretend he defecates rainbows he did have a turnover that contributed to a a goal against the other night.

I still think he's better defensively than any defenceman this team has had in a decade.

That being said, Martin is a beast. Love that guy so far. Him getting the empty netter against New Jersey the other day was perfect. That EN goal was the ultimate **** you to the Devils. It was great.

I guess I'm alone, but I havent been impressed by him yet. He made 1 nice play to break up a rush in either the last game or game before that but I've seen a cple bad turnovers and nothing to write home about yet. So far he hasnt looked like he would have been as usefull as a 5 million dollar winger yet but hopefully he changes my mind as the season goes on.

You must be watching different games? If you think Kovalev, Gange, or some other 5 million winger is going to have more of an impact on this team your crazy.

He's pretty good, and for 5M that's what you get these days so you really can't complain. I don't love him as a #1 D-man though.

Checking into this thread.

Martin has been a big bright spot in an otherwise lackluster start to the season. Really solid, legitimate two-way defenseman. Great wheels, extremely smart and savvy with the puck and possesses a much, much better offensive skillset than I imagined. It's going to be a lot of fun watching this guy this season.

But yeah, I've been pretty pleased with Martin. I was expecting a slightly worse Brian Rafalski and I think that's pretty accurate, no?

His only weakness is a lack of a point shot. Otherwise he's the best defenseman the Pens have had while I've been old enough to watch the games, at least.

That sounds to be about on the right track, comparison-wise. I like Rafalski a lot but I feel like Martin is better equipped to sort of stand on his own, if that makes any sense. Although Rafalski is probably a little more adept and dangerous in the offensive zone.

Another thing to keep in mind about Martin is that he's still fairly young. I mean... not like... prospect-young but young enough that the team will have him in his absolute prime years.

I don't think he plays like Rafalski at all. I don't know how to compare him. But if he was a character in a Mario game (like Mario Tennis), he'd be Mario. Just all-around everything.

Just wait till Michalek comes back, we can all make a circle around him bowing to his awesomeness. Martin and Michalek will be our bright spots. Just wait for next off season when Shero picks up some skilled wingers.
