It's really hard to blame anyone except for Fleury for starting Brent Johnson. If Fleury doesn't let in those two softies against Montreal and then allow 4 goals on around 15 shots against Toronto, we're not even having this conversation.

To be fair, the Toronto game was a team effort on the loss, but Fleury has to be better than he was.

If we lose 3-2, then no.

If we get blown up 6-1 and Johnson lets in 3-4 easy goals, you won't think it was a bad move?

I was looking today and I think we are 5th in shots allowed averaging around 24 a game. Now that doesn't speak towards the difficulty of those shots but you would think if the defense is allowing that small of amount of shots there would be less goals.

I guess it's easy to say after the fact. Before the game however, I don't see how we really have any other choice but to start Johnson right now.

well considering all the penguins powerplay has consisted of is players trying to make ESPN's top play of the day, I doubt jackass 3-D was going to help you remember that

I was wondering last night how much I would have made if I got a dollar for every "MAF wouldn't have stopped that" statement from Pens fans after a save by BJ?

And we were SIXTH overall last year, and that's over a much healthier 82 game sample size.

It's a cheap copout to hear about "defensive breakdowns" to excuse every bad goal Fleury lets in. The other teams have professionals on their side too with the ability to create chances for themselves, and I don't care who you are a unit, breakdowns will happen.

It's actually a contradiction for fans to justify Fleury's salary as well as his elite status - and then blame the defense for every single goal. The reason you pay a goalie 5M as opposed to 1M is specifically to defend against those breakdowns, or else what's the point?

People blamed defense last year for losing to Montreal. I blame allowing two goals from the icing line, wraparound goals while defending a lead, and allowing a goal on the first shot in three separate games.

Can anyone honestly say if Halak (last spring's at least) was on our side and Fleury on theirs, that the series would have even went past 5 games?

I hope the officiating's better today.

Anyone see what happened in Buffalo? They were pressuring Montreal looking to tie the game, and the whistle blew for having too many men on the ice.

Problem was, Sabres had pulled the goalie

Bottom line is defense and goaltending are inertwined. If we are letting in a lot of goals and not winning games some one is not doing their part of the deal.

Honestly this goaltending move may have been issued from above. Shero essentially called out Fleury in the offseason in regards to his poor play; the only time I can remember Shero even offering a hint of player criticism.

How does Fleury react to that? By playing the worst starting goal keeping of anyone in the league.

The guy is lucky to have a long term contract or people would be wondering if he was nearing the end of his time in the league.
