That was my point.

That deal seems a little too good to be true for me.

I don't know anything about the Wild so here's a dumb question - did the current GM sign Havlat? If so I think there's almost zero chance he's traded.

You can't bury Kovalev - he's got a 35+ deal so he stays on the cap regardless

Which is a good point and also, Havlat was interested in coming to Ottawa on the same deal he got in Minny but Murray didn't want to commit the term, and then he signed Kovalev, and now he would probably consider swapping Kovalev for Havlat.

I meant the player. You bury Kovalev so he's not in Edmonton. The contract is off the books at the end of the year.

Who said that?

Cause there's no indication that that's true whatsoever

Here we go again....

Eklund is puking out the usual Spezza trade rumours with up to five teams interested, the usual parties of course, LA, Rangers, Edmonton, Minny.

Havlat is a pipe dream. The Minnesota Tribune guy, Mike Russo, says Murray just wants a rugged defenseman, meaning he can't make up his mind on how he wants to build the blueline.

Havlat would be awesome. One of the dumbest moves ever was getting rid of him.

As for Havlat, his contract is not bad at all. How much do you think it is going to cost to sign a guy in his prime years that is able to give you a point a game?

I'd take him back in a heartbeat.

What we actually NEED is a defenseman though.

If Murray really wants a physical defenceman than a Kuba for Bieska trade would make the most sense because their salaries are close. I think Bieska would certainly make our defence tougher but would it be better?

The one thing that bothers me about Havlat & I like Havlat, is that he too is brittle. Nothing would piss us off more than trading for Havlat & he gets hurt & can't play in the playoffs (playoffs? You're talking about playoffs?) He also has a 5 yr contract which is a lot if he starts going down hill. I would prefer Brunette he is a consistent scorer & is a pending UFA.

Bieksa is brutal. The only upside to that trade is that Bieksa is a UFA after the year and we'd have more cap room to work with.

If Murray truly had the choice between signing Kovalev and Havlat, than it IS the dumbest move he's made as a GM.

Yeah...but Brunette is a) old
b) plays a very specific role on the Wild as in, he hangs around the net and gets the garbage goal. If he comes to Ottawa, he has to play in that role or else he may be really ineffective. Especially considering that he is an extremely slow skater

Bieksa would absolutely make our defense worse if it meant us losing Kuba.

Canucks fans for the most part hate the guy and I think for good reason - you can see some of it here: http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=830540

I know this is Murray's last year as GM...but IMO if he's thinking of getting a rugged defenceman after letting 2 walk via free agency after only 6 games, he needs to be tossed.

GMs need to have patience and be able to believe in the product they have assembled.

Havlat used to be made of glass, I'll give you that. But his last 2 seasons he played 80 and 73 games respectively. Only thing wrong with getting him (won't happen) is maybe the length of his contract.

But contract aside, wouldn't it be cool to see him again in a Sens uni? I used to love that guy.

It was rumored after that Murray wanted Havlat at a shorter deal (around 3 years?), Havlat wanted a longer term and went for Minny's offer.

Maybe a year off and Murray will change his mind...who knows by the way Murray rolls.

I agree

The last thing this team needs is rash decisions being made while the season is still young
