Remember when they fired him they did not want to pay jim because he made a trade without Pulfords prior approval. Kind of like GMing with one hand tied behind your back.
Sorry

I thought I was only other person in world who defended Smith so whenever name is brought up I usually go on defensive

He certainly was different, but I liked Mike Smith as well. As someone pointed out, he was in an impossible situation.

Anyone know what he is doing today.

Probably at an art festival in Sverdlovsk.

I give him a lot of credit for Keith, Seabrook, Byfuglien and Burish. I remember that draft and thought it was a very good draft by Smith at the time and couldn't help but wonder why it took him so long to draft some solid N/A players instead of high risk, high reward Euros. It was just too little, too late as far as him staying around to see how they turned out. He wanted that next Russian star so bad and that ended up being the death of him with the Hawks. Good on him for changing course and leaving the organization with some great talent.

Alpo Suhonen is the reason many people rip and curse Smith to this day. Not one of his better moves to say the least, but he certainly had a big hand in some good things happening in the organization down the road that we've been enjoying and continue to enjoy today.

GOOOOOOODDDDDD NEWS

Jassen Cullimore will not return to our franchise next year. He signed a contract in Germany with the Iserlohn Roosters
