Hartnell vs Umberger

Did we make a mistake by letting R.J go and going after Hartnell?

Yes, we traded Umberger for 1st than we drafted Sbisa, who was than traded for Pronger bla bla bla. Forget that.

Who is a better player?

R.J makes 3.75 for another year vs Hartnells 4.2 for 2 more years

In terms of stats:
Umberger: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=2503
Hartnell: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=2167

I terms of plays they are both about even. I would even get Umberger because of his two way play and he does not take a lot of penalties like our red head.

Would much rather have Umberger. He can play any position, is good defensively and can put up 50 points

I hate some of the penalties Hartnell takes, but the only hitting Umberger's ever done is getting himself lit the **** up. He's going to be a vegetable at this rate.

Tough to say. I voted Hartnell but I could just as easily say Umberger. They both bring different styles of play and different roles to the team. If Hartnell continues to suck, however, I would change my answer to Umberger, but I am giving him the benefit of the doubt that he will rebound after a poor season last year.

Not really a fair poll IMO. I'd obviously rather have Umberger, but it really wasn't an option.

Hartnell played best with Carter and Lupul.

Maybe try Hartnell-Carter-Zherdev?

Umberger for me. I like Hartnell a lot, but Umberger is just a better player in my opinion.

A somewhat unfair question.

Hartnell was signed after the year of suck, in which Umberger posted 28 points and a -32 (and he earned that -32 with his defensive play at C). Umberger was much better the following year (as a wing), and that was paired with the emergence/addition of some other young players making money.

If Umberger had not of blown up to 50 pts, it probably wouldn't have been a problem.

We had Hartnell and Umberger at the same time. Hartnell had a NTC with only one year under his belt as a Flyer and Umberger was up for a new contract.

It wasn't a mistake at all. It was just logical.

Also, they're different players. Personally, I didn't/don't see the big deal with Umberger. He'd be nice to have, but I don't think he gave us a single thing we didn't already have. We had way too many centers. We have too many now even.

I would say Hartnell, because Sbisa was a big peice in getting Pronger. But w/o that, I would say Umberger by a little do to versatility.

Yeah, it's a bit of an unfair poll. We didn't really choose between the two of them.

If that had been the case though, I'd take Umberger every time. I wouldn't have minded them on the same line together though.

Completely wrong question. This wasn't Hartnell vs. Umberger, but Lupul vs. Umberger. Hartnell was already signed to a long term contract when the team had to make that decision, plus he had a career year the year after Umberger left.

I do think it was a mistake though, since I believe Umberger to be a better player than Lupul, a better playoff performer (yes, I do know about Lupul 4 - Avs 3) and probably would have cost us less. Then again Holmgren was it that gave Lupul his contract so that point may be moot. Alas, neither is on the team anymore, and the Pronger Trade Bait worked out fine so far.

Lupul wasn't trade bait to Anaheim. If anything, we gave them the extra 1st round pick to take his salary off our books.

You may not know that, but Joffrey Lupul has been traded twice where his team got Chris Pronger in return. Once from Anaheim to Edmonton, and after we got him from Edmonton he got traded back to Anaheim. Hence he is Chris Pronger Trade Bait.

Also, Umberger got us Columbus 1st round pick, which became Luca Sbisa who we traded for Pronger alongside Lupul.

Lupul is poop. Salary dump.

It's not even a question who is better Lupul or Umberger. By default R.J takes it.

Oh, I didn't realize you were being tongue in cheek. I did; however, know that little tidbit. It is one of the many jokes DGB has beaten to death like a red headed stepchild.

I think the team is better with Hartnell's grit and versatility, though Id really like to see RJ back.

It's probably only cuz Hartnell with Flyers got much further than Umberger's teams, but one thing to consider was Hartnell's great PO performance last year.

After sucking all regular season, he lit it up whn it counted. That matters a lot.

Yes, if Umberger's team made it as far as Flyers did, maybe Umberger would've generated just as much PO points as Hartnell. We dont know, though.

Erm... Hartnell and Umberger were on the same team that went to the ECF... Umberger also put up huge playoff point totals that year. He owned Montreal.

He owned Montreal, but didn't really show up for the other series

I like Umberger and all, but where would he fit on this team? 17th line center?

He'd be a winger here.

Umberger got paid because he lit up Carey Price.
