Ruff hopes the worst is behind the Sabres

Quote:
"We have to prove we are a better team…. We’re diggin’ in and the adversity should make us better. If it doesn’t, we aren’t the team I thought we were.”

Lindy Ruff did not hold anything back when he joined the Howard Simon Show Tuesday morning. When asked who should take the responsibility for the team's slow start, he pointed the finger at himself. "I'll take full responsibility. It's my responsibility for the way this team plays. They have tried to play like individuals and that is not working. Hopefully we get this out of the way right now. The important thing is to get this corrected right now. I shoulder all the responsibility right now."
Quote:
Ruff mentioned that he talks with GM Darcy Regier everyday and does not believe 6 games is a fair evaluation for his team and cited the early injuries to his squad and the time his players need to gel.

I can understand the "gel" excuse for Morrisonn, Leopold, Ennis, Gerbe & Niedermayer . . . . . but that's no excuse for everybody else. They've been playing together for five years now.

Either the chemistry and effort are there or they're not.

Except every line was new to start the season.

It's been more than 6 games for a few of these guys.

And 2/3 defensive pairings were new.

And they weren't playing the Maple Leafs to start the season.

Not being an apologist (the effort isn't there from some of them, that horse has been beaten enough). Miller has played well in his last two starts, played well enough in a couple others. While Miller is not Hasek, I'd hate to waste another Vezina-caliber season with sputtering, inconsistent offense.

Hope is not a plan.
It is that which you have when you have nothing else. Hope better turn into reality real soon now or this season is over. Ruff and Regier know this and by game 20 if this isn't turned around there will be a lot of happy people in WNY as they'll both be out on their *****, as they should be.

I've been as big a supporter of both of them but this start has to be the last straw.

Ta,

I was at the Montreal game friday, and they just looked plain unmotivated. Ruff needs to spur motivation or get someone that can because obviously our Captain hasn't done too much

I remember a news story from last year saying something to the effect that Ruff isn't going to yell and scream at this team anymore, that it's up to them to get themselves motivated. His position was that these guys have been together long enough and in the league long enough that he shouldn't have to be hard on them to get them motivated.

Or he can hope *and* execute a plan (bag skate?), since they are not mutually exclusive concepts.

Your right Ruff 6 games is not enough to completely evaluate the team, BUT DON'T WAIT UNTIL 60 SOMETHING GAMES INTO THE SEASON TO ADMIT THERE IS A PROBLEM. All the same problems of last year no offensive consistency, terrible power-play, no real captain still plague the team now. Shouldn't really be a surprise we have almost the same line up as last year, but since Regier thinks the team is better that's enough for me.

Ruff and "execute a plan" don't belong in the same sentence.

Bag Skate. You don't have to agree with it, but he did try something. It's ultimately up to the players to get out of the funk. Ruff can only try to guide them.

What else can a coach do? He can call out his players, he can make them skate until they puke, he can switch lines, but what can he do if the team is just misfiring on all accounts?

I don't think the Sabres are being miscoached. I think they just aren't performing and aren't getting lucky bounces that could be changing the way they play.... It's been 6 games in. I'm not jumping ship yet, it looks ugly, but I'll take another look at our team after November.

sounds pretty stupid to me... Ruff has the best job security in sports... and the fan base lets him have it with that type of mentality.

"Ruff can ONLY..."
"Its up to the players..." NOT Ruff

The truth hurts. I'm not absolving Ruff of any responsibility. But it is not 100% in Ruff's hands. He can yell, he can make them bag skate, he can bench players. But the players have to put in the actual work.

Of course he hopes the worst is behind them. For him, it better be behind them or we're going to be stuck in last place all season.

Q: Would a very poor (12-15 seed in East) finish be enough to get Ruff and/or Regier fired? What about just missing the playoffs?

The problem is, who's going to fire them? Quinn? Golisano? Neither of them are going to make those kind of decisions. The only way Ruff and/or Regier leave is if they step down or walk.
