Burrows Ready To Go

I was at the BMW AutoWest Lot today where he was doing an autograph signing session. I asked him how the shoulder was and I gathered this from our brief, but encouraging conversation.

He has been skating.
His shoulder has been fine.
He expects to be back in the line up on Nov. 2nd (only reason why is because of LTIR.)
He has been ready to play for about 2 weeks now.

I'll upload later but he signed my hat, my Milllionaires Jersey (which he was impressed with. New 3rds for next year?), and of course my Burrows jersey. I found it hilarious how many fans bough Burrows jerseys just to get it signed by him with the tags still on. Hahaha.

It made my day.

For all those who are in doubt because it is my first post, I'll upload the pictures of the Jerseys and hat he signed.

I don't want to see the Millionaires jersey until we're defending champs.

Hahahaha. Burrows loved it though he reaction was "Wow, isn't the very first jersey when Vancouver had a team?" Then he wasn't sure where he should sign. He signed the bottom of the jersey due to the logo being made of some frizzy wool material.

That and I think LTIR You have to be on for a certain amount of time before drawing back into the line up? Correct me if I'm wrong?

It is a two part test - a minimum of 24 days AND 10 games.

The 24 day period is over as of 31 October, 2010.

The 10th game is November 1, 2010 against New Jersey

So Burrows earliest return date is November 2, 2010 against the Oilers in Edmonton which is the 11th game.

This is great news to hear. And due to LTIR forcing him to stay it it allows more time for his shoulder to get better. We know that if that wasn't the case he would come back as soon as he's medically cleared, regardless of his shoulder's true health.

Now I'm more confident there won't be re-injury.

Also this means that we might see Bieksa dealt (please? ;_ before November 2nd.

Nice and then will probably have Hamhuis and Ballard back too, (Bolduc with some luck too centering the 4th line).

It will be nice to watch, if they all are back by then.

Anyone care to work out what our cap situation would be on Nov 2nd if he comes back into the lineup?

If he's been ready for 2 weeks that's very good news (but not completely, since we could've used him). He'll get lots of practices in before his first game so he won't be completely cold ala. Mats Sundin.

Isn't that cap circumvention?

I'm not sure. I asked on the other boards and apparently it's 10 games + x amount of days where you can't be on the roster if you're on the LTIR. I mean it's not really Cap Circumvention if you're not technically playing.

Tell that to the GM of New Jersey where they have a player who mysteriously had a LITR injury at the right time. And even then, they still had to go with a reduced (and technically illegal) roster.

Don't think Burrows was that ahead of schedule when he was put on LTIR. How were the Canucks supposed to know?

No.

Would anyone truly believe that we would put our leading goal-scorer on LTIR to start the season if we was healthy all along, simply to manage our cap space?

It's impossible to always accurately predict the length of injury recovery.

I'd assume the LTIR rules include the day/games requirements for just this reason.

If you're going to benefit from the cap relief, you suffer the loss of the player for that minimum number of games/days whether he's ready to go earlier or not. That's the opportunity cost of using the LTIR designation.

Yeah, similar to NJD situation. So are you saying both are or both aren't cap circumvention?

I mean, obviously they are circumvention in the practical sense, but do you think they are in the CBA sense?

I don't see it as a stretch at all - you're tanking a $2M contract for part of the season to enable much bigger, higher profile contracts to fit.

I'm not saying "good/bad", I'm just wondering where the line might be reasonably drawn.

so, burrows was injured, we put him on LTIR, he healed faster than expected but has to ride out the day/game requirements to be activated.

sounds to me like thats fairly standard.

Burrows' LTIR enabled nothing other than having room for guys like Tambellini and Desbiens under the cap as replacements. Once he returns the team must make room for him by cutting salary. Even if the Canucks did use that space to sign other players, once he's activated, those "bigger, higher profile contracts" would have to be waived/traded to get back under the cap.
