The NHL made a huge gaff by attempting to develop markets. It is the premiere hockey league in North America...it shouldn't be the league that has to develop interest in hockey, it should have been there before the NHL showed up.
FTR, because this kinda ties into the other thread, it would be nice if the NHL didn't have to do this stuff. If the minor leagues were consolidated under NHL direction they could very easily create a grassroots network of youth programs in partnership with USA Hockey, and probably accelerate the process greatly.
But the reality is, minor league hockey has been in pretty much every market for at least 40-50 years and barely made a dent. They're just not stable enough, and quite often they're run by the Boots Del Baggios of the world who couldn't care less about the state of the sport.
