And apparently injuries/illness to players that have stayed in the lineup, if the team PBP and color guys are to be believed (they've mentioned Eriksson and Ott among the walking wounded).
Combine that with about a 5 game goalie slump that started in Calgary the first time around and an anemic offense since (which was cause by Benn's absence, part-time Richards absence and Neal being mired in a cold stretch) and you've got this mess in a nutshell.
Wondering what Stars fans think of Calgary waiving Hagman. I know he played under Tippett in Dallas for a few years so, was he a Tippett kind of player? Would it make sense for the Coyotes to put in a claim? Or is $3M owed to Hagman for the 2011-12 season a massive overpayment?
I was quite fond of Hagman when he played here. A lot of energy, some decent skill, not a bad guy to have in your bottom 6. That being said, I think every stars fan knew his near 30 goal season was a fluke when it happened, and that 3 million is pretty severe overpayment for him. At 1.5 he is much more appealing, and a decently more sensible acquisition.
Hagman is definitely a Tippett kind of player. He would undoubtedly fit in and help the Coyotes, but that contract is difficult to swallow. While I don't know Phoenix's financial situation perfectly, I have to assume you can't just be throwing around extra millions.
Hagman is a great defensive forward, which fits with Tippett great. But during his last season in Dallas he put up some good offensive numbers and wanted to be a top 6 forward. He got the contract that allowed him to do that and he put up decent goal totals for a while but he is a very low tier top 6 forward, but would be a very good bottom 6 player. But that is a lot of money to pay for a bottom 6 forward. If the money is there and the owners don't mind spending it then by all means he would be a good pick up, yes overpaid but certainly not anywhere near some others in the NHL.
And to answer your question no Dallas should not put in a claim on him. Stars are broke and have some pretty decent options for checking line.
