So glad we didn't get Kovy

I'm sure it's been discussed, but as expected the BS that comes with putting all your eggs in one basket in a team sport is hurting the Devils. They're not going to be able to keep that 15 player roster going for long. Kings on the other hand, are doing ok and have plenty of time and cap space to deal for top 6 player during the season.

Kovy is still an impact player no doubt, but still glad the Kings didn't get him.

Had the Kings gotten Kovy at what they were offering, they wouldn't have any issues like what NJ has now.

Kovy would have helped our 5 on 5 scoring issues(and much more). I'm upset we didn't get him, I thought he was somebody that would have put us over the top.

Oh well it's in the past now, and hopefully we can pick up a legitimate scorer this season.

A top line LWer is the missing piece to this team. We did not get Kovy, we need someone else.

I am excited to see Loktionov though but don't know what to expect because he is really young.

Who knows, maybe he's the next Datsyuk?

Jeez, if he is even 1/3 the player that Datsyuk is, I will be satisfied.

I don't necessarily agree. Getting Kovalchuk at the price that the Devils got him for - minus the drama, of course - would have certainly helped this team out a lot. He is an elite goal scorer, and those don't grow on trees. He would have fit in well on this team, and been the missing piece to the puzzle. On NJ, he is now playing for a top heavy team with questionable defense and twilight goaltending.

However, thankfully this team is loaded with picks, prospects, and cap space, so if/when the time comes this season to add a significant player up front, we have all the pieces to get it done.

You're implying Kings offer was anywhere near what Kovy wanted lol.

Also the argument during that time was that Kings should pay what Kovy wants to get him. Overall, would have been a damaging move and not worth it.

Have plenty of time, players to trade, and cap for that. Good thing it wasn't wasted on Kovalchuk.

Whoever LA gets to supplement the loss of Kovy is going to cost as much, if not more than what he is receiving (6.66m).

LA isn't in the same cap situation as NJ, and as a result, would not be in their horrible situation. Lets not forget about Parise at the end of the season either.

Either way, it is a huge loss, and one that none of us should be "glad" about.

How can we lose that which we never had? I am ok with the Kings not signing Kovalchuk for the money that he received. $9M a season for 10 seasons? The guy is not Ovechkin or Crosby and a salary like that throws the salary structure of the entire team out of whack.

We can get a good scoring winger for a lot less than $6.66M cap hit.

That's what I was thinking. If he actually would sign here for the deal he signed with the Devil, then in 2 yrs we drop Smyth and we basically upgrade from Smyth to Kovalchuk for $400k.

Only problem would be resigning Johnson Doughty Simmonds this year and having a tight cap next year.

The premise of this thread is incorrect.

All it needs is a silly GIF in the OP for Tony to lock it.

The Kings are paying Smyth less than his cap hit. There is room for his cap hit this season. If Lombardi lands a #1 LW I would not be shocked to see Smyth moved with his consent in the off season. Smyth served in a valuable role last season and continues to do so now. He is one of the reasons Kopitar is maturing in the right way.

Whoever said what about Cammalleri, like I said we can get a good scoring winger for a lot less than a $6.66M cap hit. Cammalleri isn't well-rounded enough to make $6M a season and he didn't want to be here in LA anyway.

Im actually mad now seeing that NJ are failing, since their lack of defence is just wasting Kovy's talents

Mad? I think it's hilarious, especially since many fans of other teams and a few Devils' fans saw their need for a puck-moving defenseman.

I'm pissed off about it. Basically, the Kings lost Kovalchuk to a team that could not afford him. The CBA doesn't work, the salary cap doesn't work and it cost the Kings a superstar player for 10 years. It won't surprise me one bit if Lou slaps the NHL with a collusion charge cause all the other owners are laughing at him and rightly so. NJ is going to sue their way out of this mess they got themselves into. Kovalchuk should be a King.

What? If the salary cap didn't work, Toronto/Rangers would probably have Kovy.
