Thats not necessarily true. He could decide to void his contract in the offseason so that he has time to catch on with another team somewhere. If he waited until he was sent down during training camp there won't be very many teams with either a spot open or cap space to pay even a #5/6 defenseman.
OK, that's possible, but there's no guarantee that it will happen until later in the summer. There will be better defensemen out there and it will take time for the free agent market to settle. At this point, I won't assume anything. Six million dollars (give or take 1/2 million) is a lot to leave on the table for a chance to play again in the NHL.
