Dan Girardi is a beast

Looks like he has some fresh new offensive confidence to go with his rock solid team defense game. Dare I say that he is our best defensemen this season? Ever since his really shaky start to last season this guy has done nothing but impress. He looks good out there with Del Zotto, its going to be a great pair for years to come. What a bargain for the money - he doesn't get his proper "props" for some reason though.

Gotta agree there. Girardi has shown poise on the back end made some great plays. Furthermore, he is blocking shots left and right and displays some nifty poke checking at key times.

Add to that, his offense is coming along as well. What i like the most about him is that fact that he gets his shots through to the net from the point. You see a lot of his seemingly harmless wristers from the point make their way to the net and cause havoc.

If he can be consistent this season then i do see a big season ahead for him. Needless to say DZ did look very good on his side.

Fully agree. He got totally undressed in both games by MacArthur and Marchand, but otherwise he looked like Anton Volchenkov most of the time. A block machine. And he's finally using that wrist shot of his. His shot is a really underrated aspect of his game. He can get it through defenders, hard and accurate.

I too have been very impressed with Girardi this season. Through the first 6 games of the season he's been our best d-man. Its almost like you stick him out there and can relax knowing that he's got things under control in the defensive zone. Still not convinced he's good enough to be a true 1st pairing d-man in this league but he's slowly making a believer outta me. Although I wasn't in the "Girardi is crap" camp last year I certainly thought he had a tough year last year and was worried that maybe the fan base had overrated him like we tend to do with many of our players. Not sure what he did in the offseason but it certainly seems like he's getting his stick on more pucks and getting ontop of the forwards in the d-zone quicker. Anyway, here's hoping it continues.

Yes, Girardi is a beast. He's part of the reason why I'm leading my fantasy hockey league in hits and blocked shots.

You're right. He has been the best defenseman. I don't think I can recall so far that Girardi has been beaten or was caught flat-footed. Just a stud on blocking shots. The puck seems to be attracted to his body.

Every time I put my eyes on him while the opponent's in our zone, I always see him stand up and just drop on his knees, and the puck just seems to find him. It just seems that whenever he does that, I'm watching.

Girardi is a legit top #4 defenseman on any NHL Team. Solid, Solid, Solid...

In fact, what is not to like about this top 4 of: Staal, Girardi, Rozy and MDZ...

Well, MDZ's a stiff when it comes to the defensive side of the puck - he'll get better, no doubt.

I love Rozy, but he's been consistentley mediocre, if worse.

He has played VERY well thus far this season. He's been great in the defensive zone; using his stick and body tog et in passing lanes and block shots. He's also joining the rush and pinching down at key moments in the offensive zone. great start to the season for Danny boy.

He's getting smarter and using better judgement. And he still knocks people on their butt, like tonight.
Can't over-emphasize what a blend of physicality and smarts can do. We're seeing the benefits of it with Dan. He's rounding out nicely.

I really though we had overpaid by about 700K a year with the contract we gave him this summer. he hasn't been flawless so far but he certainly has been more than acceptable.

Hopefully he can remain consistent. He's always had issues with that.

my fav d man on the rangers, popularity with fans dipped with gabby fiasco, but he is an undrafted gem that a lot of other teams come up with but we rarely do. he a do it without fanfare player who gets it done on a regular basis and that is always a hit with fans

I think it's crazy how our defense has changed so drastically over what seems like overnight. After the Buffalo game our defense was killing us, and now it's probably the best aspect of our game.

A group of Staal, Rosy, Girardi, MDZ and Sauer (with whoever filling in on Sauer's side) suddenly looks amazing compared to just a few games ago.

Last year I said that he's a very good 3rd pairing D-man on a good team and a decent top-4 option on a poor team.

I'll gladly eat crow, I like mine well done thanks.

So glad this thread popped up because guys like Anisimov, Boyle and co have been getting recognitions (deservedly so) but Girardi is right up there with those guys as most improved this season. That contract is looking pretty good right now.

Others have probably mentioned this, but I still can't believe he was never drafted and we signed him as free agent.

Could turn out to be one of Sather's better moves.

I remember some of the posts when we signed him and lots of folks (including myself) knew nothing about him.
