Markov needs surgery on right knee could miss 6 months

Montreal Canadiens defenceman Andrei Markov will require surgery as a result of a knee injury sustained Saturday and is expected to miss an extended amount of time, according to a Team 990 report.

Sources told Tony Marinaro, host of the Montreal Forum radio program, that Markov tore the ACL on his right knee, the same one that he hurt in April -- an injury that required six months' recovery. The report said Markov has a partial tear to the ACL graft as well as associated bone contusions and a large radial tear to the lateral meniscus.

The oft-injured Russian star was helped off the ice after a crash during Saturday's 7-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. The team has kept quiet on the extent of the injury, saying only that he will miss Tuesday's game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

How long was he back for before he got hurt again? That's really unfortunate. I'm glad that it affects Montreal negatively but I like Markov as a player.

This is a shame. Markov is easily a top 10 defenseman in this league but he just can't stay healthy

shame he's had so much health trouble the past few years. That pretty much takes him out until right at the end of the season or playoffs.

should probably put off contract talks as well, which may make habs fans nervous.

Good thing that Gauthier didn't sign Markov yet. We have no need for a one-legged defenseman.

Markov, you were good. Thank you for your services and I sincerly wish that you will be able to walk at 40. Hang them up before it's too late.

Major blow to the Habs. I really hope they make a move, cause they don't have the personnel to replace him.

And this kids is why you don't come back from injuries early. On that note, sucks for him and montreal, he is an awesome player when healthy.

Really unlucky or very injury prone. Either way, he will be sorely missed.

If this is true I have my doubts he'll ever be the same player again. Too bad.

You do realize that you can't fully recover from some injuries, right?

Remember when Mathieu Schneider was supposedly out for the season and then he came back the next game?

I can dream can't I?

Still waiting to hear from a source more reliable than Tony Marinaro but yeah, either way I'm sure it's not good...

Why do you assume he came back early?

If he truly is out for the remainder of the season/playoffs, it will be really interesting to see how Gauthier handles any contract negotiations with Markov. Is he now considered damaged goods? Is it best to just walk away from him and invest the money elsewhere...or do you sign him at a discounted rate and cross your fingers he can recover?

I'm not a doctor but I have a friend who had a torn ACL. He can't really play sports anymore as he gets it injured again very, very easily.

From what I understand it's one of the worst injuries to get, sportswise. I think this is a case of him being extremely unlucky at first but as a result of repeated injuries he is now more injury prone, at least to his knee.

But hey, I am not a doctor and this may all be bullcrap.

Either way this hurts us badly. Anyone have any defensemen they want to ship out?

He really should take an extra few months off after he recovers.

This is going off of a report from a certain reporter at Team 990 who has become less and less credible over the last couple years as he tends to want to break the story first, even if he turns out to be wrong later by just saying 'reliable sources'.

Canadiens run a very tight ship, I'll wait for the official report.

Keep in mind that the original source is Tony Marinaro, who less than a month ago proved that he had no inside sources when it came to Markov's return (basically saying he'd return every game for 2 weeks until he finally did... Exactly when he was expected to).

Wouldn't be surprised if it's true, but it's hardly confirmed.
