I am obviously no fans of the Sens, but I think you guys might be good partners with Washington. Something around Alzner + for Phillips if the team isnt playoff bound near the deadline.
Personally, I like Alzners game and think he will be a top pairing defenseman, with the kind of two way game that would gel well with either Karlsson or Cowen one day.
Phillips would be great to have out of the division too haha! but overall, I think this would be a good asset for the future if you were going to lose Phillips.
If Phillips wants to stay a Sen, then I dont really see any pieces Washington would be interested in so this wouldnt happen.
There was a rumour last year that he would have been included in a deal if we had moved Anton at the deadline. I think Washington is pretty happy with Alzner so I doubt he gets moved this year.
If we are truly out of it come the deadline I'd hope we'd try and move Phillips for a late first round pick. And then just re-sign come the summer a la Doug Weight in 05-06.

Sure thing, but only if we can re-sign Phillips again next offseason after you guys get bumped in the first round.
I'm just messing around. I don't really know enough about Alzner to know his potential. What's been the holdup with him cracking into the league?
I really dont get it personally. I saw him play in the AHL 8 or so times and he always caught my eye with his positioning defensively and offensively.
If the season goes bad, this is the kind of deal I wouldn't mind seeing the sens make. Phillips would be impossible to replace. But....he's a UFA-to-be, and he'd be worth a fortune for a team going into the playoffs (he's just built for the playoffs). Therefore, he'd probably be my first choice to move if the sens tank this year.
The other thing with Phillips is that he's not a cap-buster type of player. He's the kind of player that is so good that you hardly notice he's there. He's never flashy, he just does everything right and never makes mistakes.
It would be tough to lose him, just because he's not going to cost a fortune to re-sign.
Philips will be a life long Senator. I believe he has a no movement, no trade clause in his current contract and took a home town discount to stay here. His wife is from Ottawa and he loves the city.

and knowing that, what if murray goes up to him and says: It's the trade deadline. You're a UFA this summer, and still unsigned. There is great interest for you around the league from cup contenders. Would you be open to playing for another team in the playoffs, and we can revisit your contract situation july 1st.

That's why I'm saying if he had the opportunity to play in the playoffs when we're definitely going to miss them, he may consider moving for a couple months. I'd ask him if he wanted that opportunity and talk to him about him coming back here in the summer. But like Alfie, even if he didn't have a NTC, I'd want him to make the decision.

Nope.
Nevertheless the guy has serious standing in the organization and if he doesn't want to be shipped out I think we should honour that.
But if we're clearly out of it come the deadline Murray(or his replacement) should simply go to Phillips and explain for the good of the organization we're in favour of moving you for young assets/picks. And at the same time explain we have every intention of re-signing him to a multi-year deal come July.
Ahhh the Ottawa fan player attachment bug strikes again.
Cut the cord people. This team will be a bottom feeder for years if we don't move our aging vets that actually have value because we don't want to see them go.
Phillips has had his time in Ottawa. We got close, but no cigar. He could help a true contender that wants to shore up the D for the playoffs. He can get us something in return.
Maybe he signs as a UFA elsewhere no matter what. Do we really want to lose ANOTHER guy for nothing?
Why do you think this team is in the state it's in?

It's not so much player attachment, just the fact that we've resigned to our fate, we know that Murray will just re-sign or let our UFAs walk instead of actually making moves that would benefit the future of this franchise.
Yeah because we really want to destroy any veteran talent and leadership we have on this team by trading our assistant captain and heir to the C when Alfie retires. Oh and just to add another redundant young defenseman to add to our 4 other rookie d-men who will be in the NHL or close to it in a year or two. Just awsome, even if we do decide to rebuild that decision would be retarded. If you move Phillips you move him for a damn good forward prospect and make sure he retires a Senator.

Guys...open your eyes. This team is over. All we are missing is Napolean Dynamite's uncle trying to throw a football through a tire.
I don't understand why "retiring a Senator" is so important to some people.
Ray Bourque is a Bruin
Theo Fleury is a Flame
Emmit Smith is a Cowboy
Joe Montana is a 49'er
Wendel Clark is a Leaf
No matter where they ended their careers.
The cycle of sports spares nobody. We need to move on. Hang on to guys like Spezza, Michalek, Regin, Foligno, Karlsson and get rid of everybody else.
Another thing, you can never have too many defensemen. Look at what we roll out there everynight. It's borderline pitiful.
Alfredsson is almost 38 years old. How much do you think he has left?
Phillips is a UFA. What makes you think he won't chase the big money some other team is bound to offer him?
I know that a lot of people can't fathom the idea of trading away these guys, but if you think this team is bad now, what exactly are you expecting when Philly walks and Alfie retires, and we get nothing for them?
