People who believe the court should be lenient with Bell (ie. try him as a minor, give him a lesser jail sentence because he meets the qualities of an upstanding individual, etc.) obviously haven't lost a relative or close friend to a drunk driver.
My opinion in these types of situations is an eye for an eye. If alcohol WAS the main cause (not saying it was, but it appears that way), Bell should locked up for many many years.
Drunk drivers get off too easily. When you disregard people's lives by getting behind the wheel after drinking, you automatically lose any leniency that should be directed towards you. It's a shame for the girl. It isn't a shame for Bell. He could be the next Bobby Orr and I still wouldn't let him off the hook if all of this ends up being true.
I know everything about "alcohol being a factor" but I think we should leave that untouched until we get more details.
I work in the news business and I would NEVER go on air saying that Bell was indeed drinking and driving at this point in time.
Very true.
The details around CTV's report (which doesn't/can't use names) and the report of Bell's accident seem to match up, but can't be taken as fact at this point.
If the 17-year-old from CTV's report is charged as a minor, then his name will not be released, if I am not mistaken. If said 17-year-old is tried an as adult, then his name will be released.

Quit trying to de-rail this thread. The post you are referring to was from a legal standpoint of an aspiring lawyer, not an opinion.

I am going for law school as well. Doesn't mean I think drunk drivers should get the minimum penalty for it based on how they are viewed as individuals.
If he's still available at Phili's 3rd I hope Burke takes him. He's a really solid player who just made a mistake in his life. Just like Matt Frattin who overcame his problems and is now a very good prospect. (Bell's situation is more serious though)
If it's true Bell is the one responsible for this beautiful young girl's death, I've lost all respect for him and I hope the Pats trade him. There's no room for anyone like this on our team.
If it's true that Bell was indeed driving drunk then what a ****ing *********. He better get a jail sentence and I hope to hell that he isn't drafted by my team. ****ing moron.
I think his career's pretty much done. He was never a surefire NHL player in the first place. This will probably stunt his development for two years (recovering from injury and court worries) and a player's development at age 18 and 19 is crucial. We've all seen prospects that have lost their jump because they missed a full year of junior. I think now Bell will be at most an ECHL player, maybe AHL but not NHL anymore.

That's what all lot of people said about Robyn Regehr after his accident, at this point we don't even know how badly hurt Bell is, or what the legal ramifications might be (if any).

I think people should relax a bit before jumping to conclusions.
Speed and Alcohol being involved doesn't mean he was driving around like a drunken maniac.
Speed is "involved" in 99% of accidents. Helps pad the statistics. Try and remember any serious accident that made the news where speed wasn't a factor...
Alcohol is automatically included as a factor if there's any evidence that alcohol was either in the car or that the driver OR passengers were drinking. So even if he was just driving with an unopened bottle in the car or he or his passenger had any blood alcohol level higher the 0.00, even if it was under the limit, alcohol will still be considered a factor.
Don't jump on the kid until charges are laid. Something being a factor doesn't mean anything.
