10/28/10 - Washington @ Minnesota - 7:00 PM CDT - FSN

Your Minnesota Wild, coming off of an apathetic 3-2 shootout loss Monday night to Los Angeles, face off for the only time this season against the reigning Presidents Trophy winner Washington Capitals. So in other words, that means Alex Ovechkin and lots of it. Ovechkin, the most dynamic player in the NHL today, comes into tonight's game with four goals and four assists in eight games. Along with Ovechkin, the Capitals have Nicklas Backstrom (no not our goalie although if they did that would some cap problems...sorry I digress) who has put up the quietest 100 point season since John Cullen. That's some evil twin.

See, the goatee means evil twin.

The Capitals also feature goaltender Michael Neuvirth who recorded his first shut out last night against the Carolina Hurricanes. Washington also has some other players who play hockey, which is something your Minnesota Wild may or may not know.

Lineup:
Washington
The Capitals, led by the disembodied head of former and present President Richard Nixon, are an impressive bunch with tons of power. Whether it's finding a new shiny robot body or opening relations with China, Washington is able to accomplish many things and crush their opponents.

See, I vill krush you. What, you didn't think I'd skip the opportunity to make a Rocky IV reference?

The Capitals look to once again challenge for Lord Stanley's Cup, although the only downside is that like every politican, they don't always deliver what they promise. Plus there's that whole nasty Watergate situation.

Minnesota

The Wild, led by Zoidberg dressed as Jesus, offer peace and hope in the form of a bumbling shellfish. Although a work in progress, Minnesota is able to scrape victories together against all opponents while hoping for a second meal this week. Always nice and sometimes taken advantage of, the Wild hope to spread their message across the league and maybe get freaky. And if not, well like usual heads will roll...

Mothers, let out your daughters. Now that's a swell-lookin' gentleman.

excellent GDT!

Hopefully it will be a Backstrom vs. Backstrom duel. Theo sucks when he is playing against his former teams.

Five hockey-related articles not written by Michael Russo*:
-Test Your Knowledge of Notorious Brawls Between Athletes and Fans (NESN) This may be on your final.
-Aeros release Brandon Rogers (T3I) What's your favorite Brandon Rogers memory? Mine's finding out he was on the Aeros and subsequently cut.
-Bottom Line: Capitals Need More From Their Top One (Washington Post) Hey this sounds familiar, although no appearance by Allan Walsh.
-NHL Goes After Digital Hockey Fans (WSJ) One of the things I like about the league is their realization that their fanbase is very digital-savvy. This goes into detail.
-Wild Prospects Update (Wild.com) Not as good as some of the other prospect articles out there, but it looks like Endras has cooled off and Granlund will resume skating.

And lastly, Kenny ****ing Powers is renewed!

*Of course you should probably read what Russo and (insert PioPress writer) wrote in today's paper - in fact, there's a Havlat article being discussed here already - but let's face it there is a lot more out there to read than the Don himself. But if not, this took me exactly six minutes to come up with (including snappy comments) so I'm won't be hurt.

I wouldn't worry too much about Ovie, things have not been going his way the last few games. Of course that also means he is due to break out and drop four. The Caps second and third lines have been playing very very solid hockey, consistently pinning the opposition back in their own zone. Two lines to watch tonight:

Laich- Perreault- Semin
Chimera- Fleischmann- Fehr

Of course best of luck to you guys and cheers to a hard hitting but safe/injury free game between two teams that do not see much of each other.

Edit for the OP: Small, but it is four goals and five assists in nine. Eight of his points were in the first five games and he finally got an assist last night.

well at least we won't be playing the trap. hey, what's the style called where you let them play for 3 or 4 solid minutes in your zone then flip it out, then repeat?

I really really hope that Richards mixes up the lines a little bit tonight, but right now our lines are projected as this?

Brunette-Koivu-Miettinen (Please break this up)
Kobasew(?)-Cullen-Havlat
Nystrom-Madden-Clutterbuck
Gillies-Brodziak-Staubitz

Burns-Schultz
Zanon-Zidlicky
Falk-Stoner

Backstrom
Theodore

I think we'll be seeing another person called up today with Kobasew and Barker questionable.

Edit: Barker is out, Miettinen is sick, gametime decision. We believe Wellman will take that spot on the top line if he can't go. Kobasew was on the ice, so I think that he will be playing?

The Fetal Position

Anyway, I'm excited to see Ovechkin live. This will be my third time now and I just love watching this guy play. If we thought this team looks very slow in other games, I'm not even sure what's going to happen tonight...

looks like at least one of Gillies or Wellman are in but likely both. Barker is officially out so Stoner gets another game to erase the bad taste he left during preseason.

Go Wild!

here's hoping the hunger that Wellman and Gillies (should) bring is contagious.

That's the greatest GDT EVER.

SO pumped to go to tonight's game. Either going to hit up ABB beforehand again if we get there early enough, or just grab some concession food and watch warmups. Actually, I just realized IT'S THE ****ING CAPITALS, so I'm 99% sure I'll be watching warmups.

I'm actually pretty excited for the OV/Backstrom vs. Burns/Schultz matchup. It'll be a great test for them and great for us to see if they have what it takes to go up against and (relatively) shut down an opponents top line.

maybe Richards gets pissy and Havlat only gets 6 minutes....

Jazzed too. I'll be there with bells on. Hockey Fights Cancer night, right? Hope the crowd is nice--there are bound to be a lot of kids with cancer in the stands and I want them to get the most out of this. It would help a lot if the Wild played a nice competitive game--it's on you, Wild: win one for the children!

Excited for this one. Ovy either scores 3 or none. Highscoring game, Minnesota wins 5-4. Havlat shows up for this one.

Caps will walk ALL over that pairing. Burns-Falk would be a heck of a lot better...and someday Burns/Scandella

Burns-Schultz is a great pairing.

Burns-Schultz
Falk-Scandella
Cuma-Barker

I'd like to see that grouping one day. But I hope Barker isn't still making 3 million/year to be a 2nd PP unit specialist.

Can't wait to see the Caps in-person, and see how we fare against their skill level. The barometer will show it tonight.

Your lineup consists of Evil Spock and Richard Nixon's Head. I think there are bigger fish to fry.

I actually think the wild win tonight. Everytime this team gets close to complete meltdown mode, they win a game or 2.

if there is anything that helps a slump it's playing against the Wild.
