Ott-edm

To Edm
Spezza 7m
Karlsson 1.2m
Kelly 2m
Lee .875
total 11m ish

To Ott
Gagner 2.3
Penner 4.2
Eberle 1.2
Smid 1.3
total 9m ish

Why Edm does this. They get the best player in the deal Spezza who will be a perfect piece to continue the rebuild around and needs a new start. Brings experience and a high level of performance and he is the #1 center that edm has been looking for.
Kelly is a great 3rd line/2 way center who will play on the 3rd line and be your #1 penalty killer. IMO exactly what this team needs
Karlsson is a top D prospect who is already playing on our #1 power play and is a top 4 with a ton of upside. Also spreads out Edm's top prospects to forward and dfence
Lee who is a former top 10 pick has fallen out of favor with Ottawa will be a solid d-man.

Why Ott does this. This move makes this team deaper, brings in another scoring line. Gagner a young center with the potential to be a true #1. Penner is a big scoring winger. Eberle is a top forward prospect that we have been looking for. Smid is a good young stay at home d-man who will work well with our young offencive d prospects coming up.

Michalek/Fisher/Alfy
Foligno/Regin/Kovalev
Penner/Gagner/Eberle
Ruutu/Winchester/Neil
Shannon

first 3 lines are in no particular order all have a combination of size youth and all can score goals.

Gonchar/Phillips
Smid/Kuba
Carkner/Campoli
Hale

Very good D who is tough to play against. With Rundblad and Cowen coming up next year the future D looks enven better

*******I know both teams are going to hate this, but IMO it makes both teams better.*********************

the oilers don't do this

they don't give up Eberle and I don't think they give up penner in this deal either

Hell no!

And it doesn't make sense for either team.

Where's Hall? If I'm giving up Spezza and Karlsson, I'm getting Hall.

Not bad actually, from a sens fan. But not enough for Spezza and Karlsson, considering no established top-line (potential in Eberle) or top-D pairing coming back our way.

Seconded x 99999999999999.

If we're giving up Spezza AND EK, we're getting a whole heck of a lot more than that coming back! (no disrespect intended to the EDM players involved).

Too many pieces. Streamline it and it still seems absurd.

Eberle
Hall
Smid

for

Spezza
Karlsson

Even more no.

Ottawa has zero interest in giving up Spezza and Karlsson.

I thought neither team would like this deal. Of course it is a trade proposal that would never happen, but it is fun to speculate.

Reasons I would do it from an Ottawa perspective:

- I would rather have 3 scoring lines then two

- Clear up 2m in cap space, which we could turn into a goalie for the playoffs

- Our centers would be Fisher, Gagner, Regin and Winchester which is not terrible but with the cap space we have for next year we could easily afford someone like Richards and Regin can go back to the wing. Just think of our Lines next year being:

Penner/xxxxxx/Alfy
Michalek/Gagner/Eberle
Regin/Fisher/Butler
Foligno/Winchester or O'brien/Neil

Gonchar/Phillips
Smid/Cowen
Carkner/Rundblad

YYYYYYY
Elliott

I estimate about 16m to sign a goalie and a Forward
xxxxxx- could be Richards @ 7m ish
YYYYY- could be Vokoun @ 5.5m ish

******Now in my crazy dream world that would be a fun team to watch*******

If there wasnt a 5 player maximum in NHL11 trade, this would probably go through.

IRL though, not a chance.

I see what you are saying, and while cap space is important, its not the be all and end all. For example, if we traded Spezza for a 7th rounder, we'd get a whopping 7 mill in cap space, but it doesnt make it a good deal.

I wouldnt go crazy about getting a goalie for the playoffs this year. After all, Leclaire played lights out in his brief playoff time last year, and was our best player prior to his injury this year. If he plays well the rest of the year, great. If not, he's gone at the end of the year. Either way, we'll have scads of cap space available in the offseason to pursue Bryz/Vokoun, and a scoring forward/sign an RFA.

I'd honestly not trade Hallsy alone for both of them

The Oilers (almost) arguably got a better player in Heatley for Cogs Penner and Smid, huge no.

Ottawa is trading the two players with the most value in the deal Edmonton takes this and runs.
