Ledger_NJDevils GM Lou Lamoriello says Devils are in planning
stages for a night to retire Scott Niedermayer's No. 27. Looks like it'll happen this season.
less than a minute ago via web
There was a clear hint that it was happening this season. I don't care what people say, he went to play with his brother out of his mother's respect. I don't consider that as abandoning us. He made a choice to play with his brother and to win the cup, and he did it. What everyone forgets is he brought 3 here.
We treat the guy like it's Scott Gomez, I think we should treat his departure like Gionta's, it wasn't a betrayal and we should have general respect for the man.
I don't have the same feelings or connections to Niedermayer since he left.
Meh

Make Nieds wait a few years for leaving in the prime of his career.
Yeah make him wait till after Marty
He left Lou hanging when he left which ******* up our season and seasons to come
plus he was a hold out when his first contract was up ...wayyy back
he was a great player while he was here, but does that make him a great DEVIL ??
Don't care what others think, Nieds was a huge part of our organization for the time he was with us, he helped mold Lemaires system that we followed for many years and were extremely successful with
I'll be there supporting him 100% if this becomes official
i was upset at missing Stevens and Daneyko's ceremonies. i was a poor college student who had to work.
i will be ridiculously upset to miss Marty's.
i dont really care if I'm at Niedermayer's or not.
that make sense?
I wasn't directing anything at you specifically, there was a thread here about a month ago where there were a lot of mixed feelings, which is really what I was referring to when I said I didn't care what others thought
I've always been Scott Nieds fan, thanks to my dad I was fortunate to attend Dano's ceremony (not trying to rub anything in) but it was such a great experience, I would look fowards to Nieds
Marty's, like you said, is an absolute must, that might top Stevens night in terms of the atmosphere

Understood
Marty's ceremony is gonna KICK ***, just wait and see which players come back to join the fun that night.........its gonna be awesome
Dano's and Stevens were AWESOME too
Nieders........eh, I'll watch from home

i know you werent referring to me specifically, just wanted to clarify. i may be going to the game that gets chosen anyway if that's the case, I'll cheer his accomplishments, not his career...if that makes any sense.
anywho, i see what you did there. shopped an extra Daneyko banner and changed it to Niedermayer!

That's fair and I understand the cheering accomplishments, not his career, well put
I wish I could even do a halfway decent job of that picture.....a poster who isn't here too much stevenwoj or something like that posted it in an old Nieds thread, so I pulled it back out again
Unless we win a Cup beforehand, Marty's retirement night could be the loudest night in Rock history to that date
I personally believe the crap defense you on seeing on the ice right now is STILL the direct result of Niedermayer's decision leave.
We have never recovered and how could you after loosing Daneyko, Stevens then Niedermayer.
But I often wonder how things would have been different...Not only in the sense of winning and Championships, but player development and organizational decisions...
Imagine if you were in a situation where you can bring up a Fraser or Corrente and have Niedermayer as his partner...You know that changes the development of a player...So many things would be different.

It goes without saying but Marty's ceremony should be in a game against the Habs.
As far as Nieds, pretty much have to go with the consensus...while deserved in spite of his leaving it still feels rushed for obvious (attendance) reasons.
Let me echo the sentiments of meh expressed others in the thread. It is too soon and will basically result in a very awkward ceremony.
The feeling that the Stevens and Dano nights had won't be there. When last we saw Nieds he was playing years of prime hockey on another team, that he still works for. Let him wait. Let him show up over several years at reunions and get togethers and let him reconnect with the organization. Right now there is really only two strong sentiments towards him by the fans, meh and f him. Niether are conducive to a number retirement.
It is a "cash grab," but I'm not entirely sure it would even sellout.

So that is why I say F him.
I agree. If he had stayed, we would have won another cup. He betrayed us by leaving no matter how you look at it.
