However, I have a "soft spot" for the Sabres, Flames, Coyotes, and Sharks, mostly because I like Miller/Vanek, Iginla, Doan/Wolski/Bryzgalov, and Pavelski/Setoguchi, respectively.

what does all this "soft spot" thing mean, actually??

"Soft spot," by my definition, means a team that one has absolutely no issue with, stemming from a appreciation of certain players on said teams, and will tend to cheer for those teams so as long as they're not playing the Devils.
I root for Phoenix because I would like to see them succeed in the desert and I also find myself watching the Blues alot because they have a great young team that's a lot of fun to watch.

ok...so you watch them besides NJ.
i dunno if i need to or should watch other games beneath NJ, cause so far, i cant say which teams gameplay i like besides the DEVILS. (nothing will come close for me, though!!)
maybe i should give it a try and watch some games when NJ dont play
I have always been a hockey fan, but I became a Devils fan during a vacation trip to Cancun. My wife and I had been in the sun too much and decided to just not go out in the evening, I turn on the TV and there is a Devils game. It was a great game with a crazy finish and we were jumping in front of the telly. Devils won, and when we came back home I bought tickets for us to go to a game. We've been fanatics ever since, she more so than me.
Her second team is Sharks, because they are fun to watch but most because they have a lot of asian fans among the audience (she is asian). That's kinda funny.

This is my definition too. I have no problem with the Bruins, and I like both of their goalies. It also helps that I am from New England, and many of my friends are Bruins fans. But when they play the Devils, **** them. I'm rooting for the Devils all the way.

Yes, in addition to the Devils. I often have to work late so I end up catching the west coast games. Also, I tore my groin last year in net so I have 2 extra nights a week to watch NHL games that used to be dedicated to beer leagues.
Calgary Flames are my official 2nd favorite team, although they're starting the season a bit slow (hey, 6-5-0 > 3-8-1 ) I'm a huge fan of Kipper, Bourque, Iginla, and most of all Brent Sutter who I would LOVE to have back here. Sutter has no problem calling out his players when he needs to, he actually has a competent system where everyone on the ice works hard, and he holds nothing back when his team plays like ****. In the Flames 7-2 loss to the Caps, Mr. Sutter called his team's play, and I quote, "dumb". MacLean would never ever ever do that ever. Are the Flames the most talented club up front? No, but they have an awesome core of defensemen and an elite goaltender, I think they'll end up making the playoffs this year as a 5-8 seed.
In addition, I'm a regular over at the Calgary board along with 3 other people
I don't understand it but Flames is the only other team I enjoy. I really like a lot of their players. However, the Devils will always have my heart!

I am right with you although I go no were near the Flame board.
I only root for the Devils, but I like the expansion teams just because I like pissing off self-righteous puritans and traditionalists. And because at one point my team was in their shoes.
I became Devils fan when I was 4 (yeah, only 4)! I`ve had a friend whos father was working in Detroit for GM and despite his parents were divorced, he used to send him some NHL stuff from US. He was probably the first man (actually a kid) to have licensed Red Wings Yzerman`s jersey. There were no fanshops in here, we were 4 years after comunism crashed and just one year as a separate state (previously with common state with Czechs) so it was impossible to buy anything from that kind of stuff and which is more important, there was no broadcast on any team from the NHL, just evening news and some weekend magazine. When I saw the Devils on the TV I loved their jerseys and two men - great young goaltender (which I always wanted to be) with an unusual style of catching and a promising defensman (Nieds) and I fell in love from the first time. I already mentioned no fanshops so I decided to make some kind of a jersey myself. I saw a report of Devils losing in the final with NYR and that really pissed me off when I saw ugly bald man rising the Cup Next year, I was celebrating the first Cup for the Devils, so I`m lucky I haven`t missed a single one despite I don`t remember much from that time.. Since then, first TV in Slovakia came up with NHL matches, then ProHockey (probably you know the mag) spread into the central and eastern Europe, then the internet... Step by step. Elias, Stevens, Holik and then Gionta were my favorites. Finally ZZ are the current ones. And I was very proud, when former Devil, Jiri Bicek won the Cup with the team back in 2003, because he grew just 30km from my hometown and he brought it to eastern Slovakia, my homeland, as well.
Same "soft spot" definition for Bruins/Hawks/Avalanche as for others. Nothing special. And also soft spot for many players of various teams. Especially for Datsyuk, St.Louis, Bergeron, Toews, Nash, Kesler, Ryan and Doughty.
Up until 2003 i was colorado and Toronto but in 2003 when i picked the devils to win the stanley cup i knew jerseys team was my team to cheer for so im now Devils and Maple Leafs But mainly DEVILS so LGD
Don't really actively root for any other team, but overall, I just admire great play, individually and as a team. So I appreciate a lot of the Western Conf. teams who seem to be more balanced in composition.
The only teams I loathe are the Capitals and Maple Leafs. I dislike their fanbases immensely, and I hate the way they play. Plus, save for Nicklas Backstrom, I don't like any of their players, coaches or management.
