Just thinking out loud here, but maybe it's time to drop the points system altogether. Shootouts can be a tiebreaker or something instead of a "point".

I like the wins losses in standings. Win pct vs points. Bring back the tie (which will never happen) and use and NFL type system, a tie counts a 1/2 of a win and 1/2 of a loss.

What does a fan need to do to graduate from being an average fan to being an above average (or even excellent) fan?

I think he actually meant 'average fan' as in 'fan-picked-out-of-a-crowd-at-random'. I don't think he was going for the average-fan-as-second-class-fan angle that everyone uses to make their own opinions sound more important.

Why don't people like this? It makes for tighter races, I like it.

Here's a rule change I have never seen discussed and one I think deserves merit.

A penalty is called with less than 2 minutes to go in the 1st or 2nd period. The team getting the man advantage has the option to take the PP at the beginning of the next period.

Flame away.

EJ pundit on hits to the head which will be under discussion. Suggests increasing suspensions until players/coaches/teams "get it".

I'm against it but I would like to see:

1-If a player's penalty still has time left at the end of overtime, he can not be in the shootout until all of the other skaters on his team have shot.

2-Ability for a team to defer a penalty shot to a power play.

PD's first story on GM meetings. This one emphasizing warm up/pregame on ice dust ups that might warrant the zebras having to keep the peace.

Just imagine how tight the races would be if we gave two points for a win, tie, or loss.

Let's do that - how exciting!!

A win = win
loss = loss
tie = overtime
OT loss = loss
still tied? = both losses, goes to a shootout

home team wins the shootout = fans get a free whopper.
visitors win a shootout = everybody's unhappy

Daly on NHL Home Ice Hockey This Morning (starts with a bit about HHOF/inductions, then segues into discussion of GM meeting).

Edit: Also discusses Swedish transfer agreement, Phoenix sale process (further along than any previous), expressions of interest in owners/locations having NHL franchise (no relocations planned)

Dale Tallon's idea for a coaches challenge does not have great support from the GMs. Bryan Murray said it is shelved for now.

Real_ESPNLeBrun
GMs broke for lunch. So far Coach's challenge and Head hits were main things discussed. Lots more to come

DarrenDreger
Shero describes the blindside, head-hit rule as a "work in progress." Says it will also be revisited in March and potentially tweaked.

GMs interested in the idea of lengthening OT to decrease the number of shootouts, but more discussion is needed.

Shanny describes a new wrinkle on the All Star game. Goes into effect this season.

Fans will vote "starters", hockey ops (and GMs) will pick the other players.

Then the two team captains will "draft" from the pool of players the day before the game to make up the teams.

PD looks at the GMs cautious approach to social media. (Nothing decided. Most of the guys do not understand it. Probably more coming after study.)

The new All-Star format sounds really fun in theory. I hope it works out.
