All-Time Playoff Data

(Mods - I know I'm posting a lot of data, but I pre-approved this with Bear of Bad News).

Here are nine tables with data about NHL playoff statistics. To my knowledge, none of this has ever been published before (aside from a few samples that I've leaked over the past few months).

Tables 1-3 show the number of times a player has led their team in goals, assists or points.

Tables 4-6 show the number of times a player has finished in the top five (playoffs-wide) in goals, assists or points.

Tables 7-9 show which players have scored the highest percentage of their teams' goals, assists or points.

An important disclaimer - this looks at offensive statistics only. It doesn't consider defensive play, it doesn't look at who stepped up and scored/assisted on crucial goals, etc. I think it's better to have this data than to have nothing - but context needs to be considered.

All data is compiled in "good faith". This means that I've taken reasonable steps to make sure that both the source data and formulas are correct - but this is a hobby, not a job, and it's possible that some errors have crept in. If anything looks wrong, let me know.

I've accounted for ties. For example, in 1981, Bossy is in sole possession of first in scoring. Trottier and Payne both get credit for 2nd, Smith and Potvin both get credit for 4th, etc.

I have data from 1917-18 (the inception of the NHL) up to and including the 2016-17 playoffs. Tables 1-3 and 7-9 cover the entire history of the NHL. For tables 4-6, I've shown data from 1926-27 onwards (when the NHL was consolidated with its rival leagues - otherwise a couple of assists can translate into a top five finish and that feels wrong).

Some comments on a few recent greats:

Crosby looks great across the board. He led his team in scoring four times, he's finished 1st, 2nd, and 2nd in playoff scoring, and only 7 players have contributed a higher percentage of their teams' offense. The biggest weakness? Out of the five times his team made it to the Eastern Conference Finals (or beyond), he was their top scorer only once.

Malkin's numbers are a bit worse than Crosby's, but still excellent. It's impressive that he was the Pens' leading scorer on three of their five longest runs. Still, as I said in the first post, we need to look deeper than just the offensive statistics. Crosby generally faced tougher match-ups, and was a better defensive player, and this pushes him ahead.

Kane's numbers also look great. He's the only player not already in the Hall of Fame who has four seasons in the top five in playoff scoring (3rd in 2010, 2nd in 2013, 5th in 2014, 1st in 2015). Obviously he'll get there one day.

Ovechkin's performance is hard to read. He's already among the all-time leaders when it comes to leading his team in goals (T-9th) and points (T-11th). He contributed a historic percentage of his teams' offense when looking at goals (behind only Neely, Drillon and Lemieux) and points (behind only Gretzky, Lemieux and Hull senior). Of course, his team never escaped the second round. Still, taking into account his importance to his team, I think it's generally been a case of the Capitals letting Ovechkin down, not the other way around. (Yes, he was bad in 2017 - no argument there).

Note in the last set of tables that a player's numbers can be hurt by long stretches of play before or after their prime (the average I present covers their entire career). Jagr is a good example. Over the course of his long career, he contributed to 30.2% of his teams' offense - good but a bit underwhelming. If you focus on 1994 to 2008, his contribution skyrockets to 42.5% - behind only Gretzky and Lemieux all-time. It`s true that Jagr never had a signature playoff run, but he was scoring at a historic pace in the playoffs all throughout his prime.

The biggest surprise? Zach Parise led his team in playoff goal-scoring six times, as much as Lemieux, Gretzky and Bossy.
