Too bad we don't get federal funding like Montreal for these events.
Crazier thing is, YOU guys pay for our Jazzfest F1, and all the crazy summer festivities.
Since I moved here, I've seen free outdoor shows on the streets for Paul McCartney, Van Halen, Stevie Wonder, Ben Harper Bran Van 3000 played a free show as well, along with an outdoor Cirque du Soleil performance.
:/
Not to rub it in, but I really do love these festivities.
Kinda strange how it seems to be the only place on the planet that has an anti-Canadian sentiment, considering all the crap you guys pay for.
This city is slashing budgets all over the place. If they're going to penny pinch on everything, then that has to include things like the Indy. That money can be better spent elsewhere IMO, in places that aren't a perennial loser in terms of finances. I am not a race fan, but it was cool to have an event like that here. I won't miss it too much, but in the same sense, it's a bit of a shame.
I was shocked when I heard the city was subsidizing it to the tune of five million per year. That is absolutely ridiculous. I like car racing, but never went to the event, but the city has much more important things to be spending money on than a car race.

I know, it boggles the mind. I have so many stories as well, and it's not just events... If the fine folks of Alberta looked into other services available, to and for the people of Quebec, that are not available in Alberta, all partially paid for via the slush fund that comes in the form of transfer payments, they would literally be sickened. Top that of with the ravenous hatred I've heard over the years directed towards Alberta. It's more than unique, it's incredible...

Looks like I should have gone while it was here but being a taxpayer the money losing aspect pissed me off that on principle I didn't feel like supporting it.
That and I'm generally not a racing fan, at least this format.
Indy is dying the slow death everywhere. Its why it was here in the first place. The esposure Edmonton gets from this was always overstated. Not many people watching on Telly.
The city is not in the business of promoting and bankrolling Indy races. They need to support someone with the bucks to pull it off. They tried for a couple of years, which I'm surprised there wasn't more of a public backlash. This is not surprising.
What the heck do you always have against political talk? First you didn't want people to go out and vote in the civic election...now no one is allowed to discuss this? What is wrong with you?

Oh theres been a lot of backlash. You don't tend to see that on the internet as much with mostly younger posters but you see it a lot more from older taxpayers.
This is one Mandel has received a lot of heat on and I like Mandel and I'm saying that. It was his baby. He cut the cord. Cut your losses and flush.

Perhaps that I'm a mod on a board that does not allow political discussion.

Read the rules.
Really that maybe be the stupidest rule on earth! Hell half of what goes on in hockey is politics. From minor all the way to the pros.. But I guess I shouldn't be talking about that sort of thing then should I!?

Loose 10M?
Bye.
ps Can the political talk guys.
I agree with the fact that the city did not get as much exposure as some people thought who hoped.
The Indy race shot itself in the foot a few years ago with the cart v indy league debate and neither race league has been able to captilize on the one popular sport.
I watch a few racing shows on line and when Edmonton has the race--it is reported almost as an after thought--where all you get is the results and that is it--other indy races--they do a balls to the wall coverage

Only if you want infractions..
You signed up for it.
This board CAN'T handle any controversial discussion. Trust me. Most of HFboards being the same way.
Opinions on politics here are like aholes. Everybody got em. Its a large part of why we don't allow it.
Again trust me, the world spinning here as it should..
It's too bad we are losing a major event like the Indy.
I never went to the Indy, I am not much of a motor sports fan but, I am a fan of having internationally recognized events in our city. The fact that we sold more tickets than any race on the circuit and still lost money tells me that the people running the show really didn't know what they were doing. The Octane Racing group seems to know what they are doing but the asking price must have been too high.
The Octane guys were correct when they said you couldn't tell the Indy was happening in Edmonton. The marketing of the event was seriously lacking - it should have been THE big event in the city and everyone should have known it was going on.
Well, let's hope we win the bid for Expo 2017. Positive international exposure for our great city is never a bad thing.
