Wellwood loaned to Phantoms

As per twitter.

Dunno why it's "loaned". Can't he be just sent up/down?

And here is the answer to our question.

For some reason it is always "loaned". That is just the lingo.

Technically the Phantoms and Flyers are distinct entities... thus the Flyers are "loaning" a contracted player to the Phantoms.

All just semantics, though.

I'm just asking because I never really heard that term being used until this year. It was always "sent down". Or perhaps I didn't realize it and only became conscious of it when the Hawks "loaned" Huet to a swiss (or french, I forget) team. Also perhaps Bartulis being "loaned" for a conditioning stint also made me aware.

it probably has to do with the flyers not playing for a few days, but not actually sending Wellwood down. They just want him to get some game time

Yeah, loaned may apply to allowing him to play, but paying him an NHL salary.

I remember when they loaned Bartulis, I thought it was strange because I was under the impression Bartulis was waiver eligible.

Wellwood back to the Phantoms

had a good run, and definitely left an impression with the organization. He will have his time soon enough.

I could be mistaken but I think if the NHL team signed a player, like Wellwood with the Flyers earlier in 2010, and he is demoted after a recall, the NHL team "loans" that player. It separates the transactions involving players who were signed directly by an AHL team, example being Denis Hamel who was signed by the Phantoms.

I think they sent Bartulis down for a conditioning stint, which is why he didn't have to go through waivers. Not sure though

I am assuming that its "loaned" so he is still on the NHL roster. Sending down takes you off the roster so loaning just keeps him on the NHL roster, but allows him to play.

He's going to be a fixture on this team at some point in the future. I really, really liked what I saw from him. I hope he doesn't take this as a demotion (rather, it's just a numbers game) and continues to work his ass off with the Phantoms. If he does that, it'll only be a matter of time before he's earned a permanent spot with the Flyers.

I agree with you, he played very solid and has good hockey sense.I am sure Lavy and Homer probably had a good talk with him and explained things to him with some positive reinforcement etc.

He said himself he never expected to play with the Flyers this soon into his pro career, so im sure hes fine with being sent down. Im sure Holmgren gave him words of praise as he sent him down
