Yep, things are always sunny in Philadelphia.

What a steal this'll be, especially if Claude hits 70pts or more this year, which he could easily do given his PP time.

And he's an RFA the year Pronger and Briere come off the books. Well well well done.

You mean Meszaros and Briere.

I would hope we're re-signing Meszaros at that point.

Pronger comes off the books 3 years later.

yeah, read the table wrong. Yeah, the way he's playing I hope he's back for sure.

Timonen comes off the year before though, I'm sure about that.

Would have liked to have seen him sign a longer contract- say 7 years or so. But good deal.

Why? We'd have had to "buy" UFA years. This way he will still be an RFA and we'll control his rights. Yes we COULD have potentially locked him at what be a reasonable cap hit 5ish years from now, but it's risky, and it would require additional capspace now; something we don't have a lot of.

In short:

1)We have him for 3 years
2)He will still be an RFA when it expires
3)We maintain valuable capspace in the short term.

and worst case ontario, if we cant afford him at the end of this contract, we at least will get good value for him in a trade or through compensation

I'm just a fan of locking your core players up long-term. It's nice as a fan to have that stability and peace of mind knowing you have this core group of players that you can count on year after year. And it's always better when you can lock up a phenomenal talent. But, as you said the bright side is he'll still be a RFA at the end of this current deal.

Shocking, isn't it? He make these sneaky moves that end up turning out really well that offset some (not all) of his retarded ones.

Flyers fans should thank Habs head scout Trevor Timmins for drafting a highschool bust that could have gone in the 6th round instead of taking the consensus, French Canadian, Claude Giroux

Ah, ****. I hate seeing the Flyers sign good players long-term. Giroux is filthy.

Seriously. People complain about the Gagne move and the Jones move.

They don't see the best defense in the NHL, a stud young goalie, and a forward core that can hang with just about anyone.

Oh well.

The only bad moves he's made were Shelley and Gagne imo. Even then, Walker has just as many points as Gagne, for a 5th of the cap hit.

The Meszaros trade, the O'Donnell signing, the Bobrovsky pickup, along with Z, and now this, were all great moves.

How about the Leino trade?

The trade for Pronger?

Hell, I'll go back further. Coburn, Hartnell, Timonen?

How bout the guy who as a point per game in the playoffs last year? For all the shouting over the last few years about his cap hit, it hasn't hurt this team any.

I like the guy quite a bit, but that would be a pretty big overpayment for only a 3-year deal...has he ever even hit 50 points before? Not worth 5 mill....yet.

I think this deal is the exact right amount...he is off to a great start, gives him the chance to earn a big RFA deal in 3 years, similar to Parise this coming offseason, and he doesn't get to test UFA after it is over...seems great for the Flyers, and Giroux can't complain because he is getting paid a little bit based on potential as well, which is great for him too

I was just listing things from last offseason. But, yeah, he's not that bad. I'd certainly take him over Glen.

Decent deal. That'll put him 1 year short of UFA and is a nice compromise. Locking him up beyond that would've simply cost too much on the cap considering his upside. Hopefully Philly was smart enough to avoid backloading the deal and compromising their negotiation position like they did with Carter.

You mean the guy that led postseason scoring even though Toews got the trophy?

Joking aside, I'm actually curious if Briere retook the title of leading scorer in the playoffs since the lockout. I know he lost it, and I think it was to Crosby. Not sure if he got it back this year.

I'm pretty sure Pronger is still the leading defenseman.
