60-63 mil isn't nearly as much of a bargain as I would like, but still good enough to not get up-in-arms about it I suppose.

Yeah, 10 for 60 is just a tad steep, bout a 750K paycut I guess, the thing is that he is going to be worth nowhere near that the last couple years of the deal, so hopefully for the first 8 years or so he plays like a 7 mill player.

I also saw him beating a homeless person today.

Carter at 6 mil per and if that article is right and Leino gets 1.5 id be a very happy man. I suspect Leino gets 2 mil per though.

63 is kinda uncomfortable. I guess we'll see.

That's so weird, I saw him peeing on one. He had his piece in one hand, and then in the other one...he was strangling an innocent squirrel.

I also heard that he traveled to Calcutta today to defecate on Mother Theresa's grave.

In a perfect world I would not want him outearning Richards, but the difference in timing of the contracts, the cap moving upward and the market conditions today make the 2 contracts quite apart in comparison. I would be content with that proposed deal and I think Philly would be looking good to contend for years to come with the players they have locked up, while still being in position to deal with this offseason.

"Tad steep", "not a bargain", "uncomfortable".

Are you guys serious? He's making 5.5m this year, did you think he was going to take a pay cut or not get a raise? Please tell me what you guys were possibly expecting this contract to be worth because I'm quite thrilled that the rumored number is under 70m.

Eh, I don't think any of us were expecting a Pronger type reduction, but considering he's worth 6.5-7 probably, 6.0 isn't a huge discount and the term does hurt flexibility just a bit.

It's not a bad deal at all, but it's not a steal like the Roo one which is probably why we're a bit spoiled.

Tell me about it, his current cap hit being 5m, to only increase it by 1m for the next ten through his prime years is gold. I hope it holds true.

It will probably be frontloaded, but wow, what a deal for us.

If we nabbed Leino at 3 years at $1.8 or something, this would show me Homer is improving his longterm planning skills.

The next order of business is dumping one of Hartnell/Carle/Meszaros though.

Leino, Giroux, Carter extensions also spell no 'Z' next year, which wouldn't surprise me. I didn't expect him for more then a year anyway.

Nodl (????) - Richards (5.75) - Giroux (3.75)
Hartnell (4.20) - Briere (6.50) - Leino (2.50)
vanRiemsdyk (0.88) - Carter (6.00) - Wellwood (0.58)
Powe (????) - Betts (0.70) - Shelley (1.10)

Pronger (4.92) - Carle (3.44)
Timonen (6.33) - Coburn (3.20)
Meszaros (4.00) - Bartulis (0.60)

Bobrovsky (0.90)

TOTAL: 55.35
CAP (10-11): 59.40
SPACE: 4.05

4.05m for a back-up goalie, a 13th, a 7th, and Nodl/Powe under this year's cap figures.

Not too shabby if we really get Carter and Leino for 8.50m total.

Even though we all know how good he is, he only has two or so good seasons under his belt statistically. That combined with the fact that it's a 10 year deal means I was expecting a larger discount.

I am also not fan of saying we need to sacrifice one of the d-men because the theory of building from the defense out is going to help save some years on Pronger and Timonen. It also means that Carter needs to contribute in the playoffs, not just a couple of points here and there but actually be a difference maker in a series or two.
well...he'd have ten years to learn, haha

That is without bonuses, and I don't see us using the bonus cushion. So subtract roughly 1.5mil from that.

That is also assuming Homer knows how to dump Walker and Leighton, which he has still yet to show he knows how to salary dump.

Agreed, although I don't think he deserves more than Richards, get it done Homer!

This exactly. As much as I'm loving Carter to be in the 10/60 range, Leino at 3/6 for 3 UFA years is criminal. The only comparable deal I can find that took UFA years would be Alex Burrows getting 4/8 in the middle of his breakout year. Never did I think they could get it done for those kind of numbers with the Ryan Clowes of the world getting 4/14.5 after one and a half good years.

If the numbers are accurate, Holmgren did a fantastic job keeping the team together.

I would be happy with a $6M - $6.3M cap hit for Carter.

I'd be very surprised to see Walker and Leighton go anywhere; I don't understand why they're never included in 2011/12 salary cap projections.

I agree with you that Richards deserves to make more because of what he brings.
But the fact is goal scorers get paid in this league and to have a great goal scorer on your team for a 6 mil cap hit is great. So I think we are going to be lucky if this is true and it is a 6 mil cap hit.
