Ugh, I hate ignorant hockey fans.

Phaneuf wanted out of Calgary, and Sutter wanted Phaneuf out of Calgary as well. He was basically a salary dump.

And, the funny thing is, White is almost as good as Phaneuf currently, and when you add in two 50 point players, I'd say the deal wasn't as bad as people act.

IDK where you have been but Phaneuf was a problem in the lockeroom and has been massively overpayed for a couple years now.....

Perry and Getzlaf are fan favorites and massively UNDERPAYED.

Lupul is the only top six forward we have that really makes sense as a trading option. Beleskey is an option too I suppose.

Getz/Perry/Ryan are all but untouchable and are signed for long term.

The Leafs don't want Blake for obvious reasons.

Selanne is NOT getting traded and the liklihood of Koivu getting traded is in two words not likely.

SO Lupul is really the only one open for trade. He performed very well for Anaheim before his injury, but he has not played NHL hockey for a very long time. Kind of a risk, especially at a four million dollar salary.

It could be Burke is looking at Beleskey...he can fill in admirably in a top six role.

just because dion wanted out or sutter wanted him gone doesn't mean you have to get hosed in a deal and comparing phaneuf to white is laughable even though i really like white

Lupul is a good player but I don't think he really fits the needs of the Leafs. At least not their most immediate need.

Ignore the Phaneuf deal for a second.

Just for fun, can you name three other deals from recent history (let's say the last three years) that were quantity for quality type trades? In this case, let's define "quality" as being a top line forward or top pair d-man. As with the Perry proposal, these deals shouldn't be made for rental reasons, cap space reasons or resulting from a trade request made by the quality player.

If you can do this, then you just might have some kind of precendent for the Ducks trading Perry for spare parts.

You didn't name a single "great player" there.

Halak for Eller + Schultz

Versteeg and Sweatt for Stalberg, Paradis and Didomenico

Kovalchuk and Salmela for Bergfors, Cormier, Oduya and a 1st

These 'Quantity for Quality' trades seem to always need a few quality pieces; a good prospect (Eller), a good pick (1st) and the additional mediocrity thrown ontop (Schultz, Stalberg, Cormier).

Sadly Leafs fans, we want Perry we're parting with Kadri...and I would be okay with that (as Kadri's max. upside seems to be a smaller Perry with better hands and a lesser shot).

Uhmmm, Cormier is not a "throw ontop", he's a top prospect.

Hosed? The Flames actually got a pretty good deal, I'd say.

Halak - cap reasons (if the Habs sign RFA Halak, they lose Plekanec).

Versteeg - Not a top 3 forward and dealt for cap reasons.

Kovalchuk - Rental deal.

It's tougher than it seems to be at first glance.

Top prospects, as in top 50 in the world, aren't usually guys who can't even break PPG in the Q and get suspended for a season.

He's a good prospect, boom or bust, but top? A guy like Eller is a top prospect.

I'm pretty sure Burke wouldn't/ shouldn't do that.

That wouldn't be my defenition of a top prospect.

Guys like Hall and Seguin are top prospects in my opinion.

horrible post

Halak: cap reasons and they wanted their future in price.

Versteeg: not a top line winger and once again.... cap reasons

Kovy: UFA rental that was not going to resign

Perry: top 5 RW EASILY. Signed for 3 more years at a discount. Fan favorite. Wants to stay in ANA lognterm.

No reason to make that Trade

One can only dream.... but Burke probably wouldn't do that so soon after making his new poster-boy Phaneuf the Leafs' new captain.

Yeah, because EVERY deal the Leafs make is a bad deal for them.

Open your eyes, the Phaneuf deal was very, very good for the Leafs. Phaneuf has star potential, unlike anyone else (White, Stajan, Hagman, Mayers, Sjostrom) in that group of players. Burke committed highway robbery with that trade, make no mistake.

People like to just antagonize Leaf fans for no reason.
