The league will deal with whatever it needs to address... something along those lines.

I would have rather EC giving a more political answer and maybe mention how Smid went after him when he delivered a clean hit.

Maybe he should say no comment and ****. It is a teammate and right or wrong you never throw a guy under the bus like that. EC is a prefect example of a selfish *****. See u on the islanders in a month EC

It's not fair that Avery got in the first punch! wah!

Avery never fights anyone, he just tries to bait guys into a penalty! wah!

If Avery had any honor he'd let schmid punch him forst ! wah!

New Yorkers think they're so cool! wah!

In my opinion, what Avery threw wasn't a suckerpunch. Smid dropped his gloves a second before Avery knocked out his ****. So it's not cheap and it shouldn't be thought as cheap. End of story.

Haters gon' hate.

remember that time carcillo got an unmatched 5 minute major because the other guy on the capitals went down in 1 punch?

Apparently you're not allowed to drop a guy in 1 punch.

lol well to be fair Carcillo basically took the dude by the sweater with one hand and clocked him with the other before he even began to raise his hands. That incident was far more amusing and debatable than this one.

Stepan quietly with 2 assists, breaking a pointless streak of at least 10 games.

Now 3-4-7 in 17 games. Not too far from Anisimov's clip last year.

the point from non ranger fans is smid was skating away and his head was partly turned at the time of the hit--When Smid was standing in front of him Avery did nothing--that is point that is being overlooked by some

It doesn't matter when Smid drops his gloves before Avery even throws the punch.

Again: I'm not a rah-rah Avery fan, but all he did was hit a guy who wanted to fight. Everbody bad-mouths Avery for starting up stuff, "but then he never drops the gloves!", well he dropped more than the gloves today. smid got his lights punched out, and you're all shocked because Avery can hit? Give it up.

Oh and you can quit waiting for "everything to go bad" with the team because of Avery in the locker room. Doesn't look like that's happening either. Quite the contrary, the team is bonding and winning. It's your worst nightmare in the Ovie/Sidney league

Just a question for Rangers fans,

IF Avery really did say "wait wait, we'll fight next shift" and then went in for the punch as Smid was skating away, would that change your opinions on it being dirty?

After watching it a few times, yeah I agree that the main board blew it completely out of proportion, but I still find it cheap and undermining which isn't a surprise for Avery. If it was anyone else, I'd still be saying the same thing.

So, some how you've been appointed spokesman for all other 29 teams?

You come over here telling Rangers fans that they have a bias in this situation, but claim that you as an Oiler fan somehow doesn't?!?!?

I think I answered your question earlier but I guess you are spending too much time over on the Olier board rehashing it to read my response.

It's called try to get an advantage...... it wasn't like he Bertuzzi'd him from behind. He hesitated, caught Smid off guard and easily won a one punch TKO.

As some just above said, he punched someone who wanted to fight?..... What a bully.

If Smid was really looking to protect his teammate he would have come over with gloves flying like Avery did a few weeks ago against the Bruins. Sticking up for your teammate isn't done by skating over and asking politely if you'd like to fight, you know, if that wouldn't in inconvenient for you right now.

The Edmonton Sun doesn't see anything wrong with what Avery did:

Smid forgot the golden rule in fighting, protect yourself at all times, and probably should have just jumped Avery without asking, with the game out of reach anyway. Live and learn.

It's almost as if whenever Avery does anything of note two different threads should be started- an anti-Avery thread and a pro-Avery thread. That would cut back on a lot of the arguments because most people have Avery-bias one way or the other.

Anyway, Avery threw a clean hit so the only reason Smid has for going over to Avery is to start something. Even if you want to say Avery threw a punch early all that did was cancel out the advantage Smid had with the visor. And how can you blame Avery there anyway? ESPN lists Avery at 5-9 and Smid at 6-3. Smid skates over to Avery wanting a fight, standing roughly a half foot taller and wearing a visor. What do you expect Avery to do? If Avery is winning that fight he's doing so by being aggressive and not letting Smid use his reach. I don't see why it's a big deal that he makes sure he throws the first punch. Is Avery classless? Did Smid have the balls to send his message by fighting someone his own size? I guess they're both debatable.

And then Whitney and Peckham go over to Avery and start talking to him as the linesman is ejecting him... what a couple of tough guys. If you think Avery's punch on Smid was cheap than how about those 2 Oilers trying to start something while Avery is walking down the tunnel?

I guess I'm just in the pro-Avery crowd... and have been there since his first game in NY.

Regardless of what he said, he didn't go "in for the punch as Smid was skating away". So this is a pretty useless question.

If you want to admit that Smid faced up and dropped his gloves then no, what's said has no impact to me. Otherwise if I were a forward I would yell to the goalie, "wait wait, I'm not going to shoot this shift, I might shoot next shift if I'm feeling it" and then I'd let it rip and score 80 goals a year.
