Burke excerises option

http://www.courierpostonline.com/new...s/s061504c.htm

Clarke said goaltender Sean Burke exercised the option on the final year of his contract, which means the Flyers will be on the hook for his $4.5 million salary if they decide to keep him, or two-thirds of that ($3 million) if they buy him out and promote Antero Niittymaki to the role of Robert Esche's backup

He won't be bought out before the season starts.

I'm fine with this. Sure it holds Niittymaki back, but if Esche falters next season, we'd only trade for someone else anyways.

there is always teams looking for good goaltending and if eveything works out, Burke won't be hard to get rid of. and if a team is really desperate, we could get a real good return for him.

keeping him as backup for one more season isn't the worst thing.

I agree, long as he has doesn't have a NTC, we could always just ship him off for somthing in return

I do recall that Burke had to waive his NTC to move from Phoenix to Philly. Whether that NTC applies once his option is picked up, I'm not sure. But, there is a strong possibilty that he could still have one.

It will not hurt philly to have him around if Esche should forget how to stop the puck. Burke is a great backup.

I am glad he will be here.
He could be traded easily at the deadline given he will be a UFA if that is the right move and if needed (Chico has never played a full season without some type of injury or at backup numbers) then he is still a good player.

I beleive, unless otherwise stipulated, once you waive your NTC once, it's waived for subsequent teams you play for.

also, I am pretty sure that if there was a team with Stanely Cup aspirations, looking for a solid starting goaltender, that he(Burke) would welcome a trade.

IMO, one way or the other, he won't last the entire season with the Flyers.

Blah, I knew this would happen. I would rather have seen Niittymaki get a shot, but I don't think another year as a starter in the AHL will hurt him.

i dont think will help him either. he allready proved he can play in the A with a team that had a crappy defense in front of him.
he should be backing up Esche in 04-05

I have a feeling Clarke wiill ship him out sooner rather than later. I stated before that he will not be here by mid-year next season and I am sticking by my call. No way Clarke pays a player over $4mil to sit on the bench.

we can try to trade Burke early, but who wants to pay him 4 million dollars? If we get rid of him, it will be right before the deadline and we will probably end up eating his salary.

The trick is going to be finding somebody who needs him. Maybe an early-season injury for a contender? If the season moves along to the mid-point, I doubt Clarke would move him just because his cost at that point isn't too much when compared to his value as an insurance policy.

Boy, aren't I a little optimistic that we'll see NHL hockey in October.

Which needless dilemma do you want?

A) Keep Burke and hear guys like Melrose say that he'll be the starter by year's end

or

B) Buy him out and get someone else (or have Niitymaki back up Esche) and then spend the year hearing guys like Melrose say that the Flyers will go out and get a starter for the playoffs (or that the backup they go out and get will).

Pick your poison!

NHL2Nite got canceled so Melrose won't be saying a lot of anything.

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Question for the board:

What do Barry Melrose and roaches after atomic testing have in common?

I'm still scarred from that "Off" commerical with a shirtless Bill Clement. Yeah, watch me put that stuff on again. It's back to Deet!

wouldn't this warrant its separate article on the Flyers main page...or on TSN? Wouldn't there be some mention other than in an article about Preems?

lucky for us.
obvious reasons aside, the nightly brouhaha he calls a suit will vex us no more.

one good reason to have burke around is the chemistry he and esche have...
the psychology of it all I suppose.
