Goaltender Dany Sabourin made 24 saves Saturday night to become the first HERSHEY goalie to post a shutout, as the BEARS won 3-0 at Syracuse. Ashton Rome picked up the game-winning goal with a second period strike against Syracuse backstop J.P. Levasseur, and Andrew Gordon added a power play goal late in the second for insurance. Brian Willsie earned a goal in the third period, and also contributed an assist Saturday night. With the win, the BEARS improved to 8-5-0-1, with two wins coming at the War Memorial against the Crunch. Sabourin has three wins this season, two of which have come at the War Memorial. (read more)

Game Day No. 16

Originally Posted by Joy Lindsay, pressconnects.com
Matchup: Binghamton Senators at Hershey Bears, 5 p.m., Giant Center, Hershey.

Affiliations: Hershey is the American Hockey League affiliate of the Washington Capitals. Binghamton has been affiliated with the Ottawa Senators since 2002.

Season series: Bears won the first meeting, 7-1, at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on Oct. 15.

Standings: Through 15 games, the B-Sens are 7-6-1-1 (16 points), sitting fifth in the East Division and in a tie for eighth in the Eastern Conference. Through 14 games, the Bears are 8-5-0-1 (17 points), sitting fourth in the division just ahead of the B-Sens and in a tie for fifth in the conference.

Notable: With Robin Lehner and Mike Brodeur both hurt, Barry Brust will start in goal for the B-Sens for the third time in less than three days. Zane Kalemba was signed to a professional tryout earlier today and will serve as Brust's backup. ... Semyon Varmalov is with the Bears on a conditioning assignment from the Capitals and is expected to start for them for the first time tonight. ... Top-line center Keith Aucoin, who is still tied for the Bears' scoring lead despite missing their past two games after suffering an injury last Sunday, will sit out again tonight. ... The Bears posted a preview for tonight's game that included this line: Suffering perhaps from a Penguin hangover, the Senators fell 4-3 on Saturday night to the Toronto Marlies. Meanwhile, the Marlies beat the Bears the night before. ... This is the first time the B-Sens are visiting Giant Center since the back-to-back defending Calder Cup champs raised their newest banner. The B-Sens have not played in Hershey since a 3-2 loss on March 28. ... Per Bears beat writer Tim Leone's pregame capsule, the Bears have gone 30-7-1-3 in their last 41 meetings with the B-Sens.

Scoring leaders: Corey Locke (6 goals + 16 assists = 22 points) leads the B-Sens in points and assists, and is also leading the AHL in points. Rookie Bobby Butler (12G + 5A = 17) leads the team in goals and is also the league's leading goal scorer. Andre Benoit (2G + 12A) is third in team scoring with 14 points, Erik Condra (4G + 9A = 13) and Jim O'Brien (7G + 5A = 12) round out the Top 5, and Ryan Keller (6G + 4A) and Colin Greening (3G + 7A) are also into double digits with 10 points apiece. Andrew Gordon (8G + 10A) has moved into a tie with Aucoin (5G + 13A) atop the Bears' scoring chart with 18 points. Kyle Greentree (7G + 8A) and Brian Willsie (7G + 8A) each have 15, and Lawrence Nycholat (1G + 10A = 11) and Boyd Kane (6G + 4A = 10) round out their double-digit scorers.

Goalies: Brust (5-5-1, 2.57 goals-against average, .922 save percentage) will make his third straight start for the B-Sens. Varmalov is expected to make his first start on his conditioning assignment with the Bears. In two games with the Capitals this season, he is 0-1-0 with a 2.90 GAA and .900 save percentage.

Forward lines: Due to a possible injury to Zack Smith last night and the fact that coach Kurt Kleinendorst said before the weekend Cody Bass would only play two of the three games, I'm not too confident I know what the third and fourth lines will be. I imagine the top two will stay Colin Greening-Corey Locke-Bobby Butler and Roman Wick-Jim O'Brien-Erik Condra. For the Bears, it will be Willsie-Mathieu Perreault-Gordon, Greentree-Jay Beagle-Francois Bouchard, Kane-Andrew Joudrey-Steve Pinizzotto and Grant McNeill-Ashton Rome-Dmitri Kugryshev. UPDATE: Per Bears play-by-play man John Walton's tweet, the B-Sens' scratches will be Brodeur, Lehner and forwards Jason Bailey, Tim Spencer and Kaspars Daugavins. So I guess Bass and Z. Smith will both play.

D pairings: B-Sens stuck with these last night, except when they put Benoit and Derek Smith out together on big offensive pushes: Craig Schira-Benoit; Patrick Wiercioch-D. Smith; Geoff Kinrade-Eric Gryba. Not sure about D pairings for the Bears.

Twitter: I will be live tweeting the game as @PSBJoyOnTheSens, but not as thoroughly as usual because I will not be in attendance. You can also follow the teams' Twitter accounts (@BSens_Hockey and @TheHersheyBears), Leone (@timleone) and Walton (@jwaltonhockey) for live game updates.

"We played the way we are capable of playing," he said. "We came in and beat Wilkes-Barre at their own game, I guess would probably be the best way to put it. We were honest, we were competing, we were winning battles, our penalty killers were very determined, our power play was very sharp, guys were changing at the right time. There were no shortcuts, no passengers. I've always said it's a process, never said it was going to be easy, but I think we're starting to see that we're more consistent now. We're still going to have some games that we're not really happy about, that will be a part of our game, but I think we're starting to see more games where we're playing pretty well as opposed to not playing very well."(read more)

Head-to-head: This is the second of eight meetings this season between these two squads. Binghamton lost 7-1 at home on October 15th.

Standings: Binghamton is fifth in the Eastern Conference’s East Division with a record of 7-6-1-1 (16 points). Hershey is fourth in the division with a record of 8-5-0-1 (17 points). Binghamton is 3-2-0-1 on the road, while the Bears have a 3-3-0-0 record at home.

Binghamton by the numbers: The B-Sens are averaging 3.20 goals-per- game, through 15 games (ranked 8th). They have allowed an average of 2.93 goals-per-game (ranked 20th). They are 15-for-76 on the power- play this season, 19.7%, (ranked 7th). The B-Sens’ have given up 12 goals on 66 chances on the penalty kill, 81.8% (ranked 18th).

Hershey by the numbers: The Bears are averaging 3.71 goals-per-game, through 14 games, (ranked 3rd). They have allowed 2.64 goals-per-game, (ranked 10th). The team is 15-for-77 on the power-play, 19.5% (ranked 9th). The Hershey penalty kill has allowed 14 goals in 75 chances against 81.3%, (ranked 20th).

Binghamton Ice Chips: Corey Locke is the AHL’s leading scorer with 22 points (6 goals, 16 assists). He is leading Rochester’s Michal Repik by one point. Bobby Butler was held without a point in Saturday’s loss to the Marlies. It was his first game without a point in the month of November. Assuming Robin Lehner is 100%, he will get the start in goal against Hershey. Barry Brust went 1-1 in back-to-back contests on Friday and Saturday.

Hershey Ice Chips: The Bears jumped ahead of Binghamton in the standings Saturday, by virtue of their 3-0 shutout in Syracuse.

Not surprisingly, Keith Aucoin leads his team in points with 19, which places him fourth in the league overall. His 14 assists place him third. Perennial B-Sens killer Alexandre Giroux, who spent four of the last five seasons in Hershey, is now playing for the Oklahoma City Barons.

Is that correct that KK has David Dziurzynski playing centre instead of Cody Bass on the 4th line & Bass is playing left wing on the 4th line? Seems odd unless the Murrays see something in this guy that he could be a 4th line centre down the road, he is a project afterall.

Yeah because playing Brust 3 games in a row sure is a better alternative then having Lehner come in.

The kid is still a rookie. Take a chance on him rather than watch the supposed #1 get lit up by more than half of the shots taken.

I would RATHER Lehner be in net so HE can get shelled but he's sitting out with an "injury". Funny how this injury happens when he was slated to start. Now, Bingo had to sign a pick-up goalie to a PTO.

Hopefully these fights that are happening just now will slow down things - would be nice to get out of the 1st period with less than 10 goals scored against them.

Oh do shut up, if you know anything about Lehner it is that he is a fierce competitor. I'm sure he would have been willing to play, KK probably held him out. You've already made up in your mind that Lehner sucks, but suggesting he isn't committed is blasphemy.
