Plus/Minus pens v rags

I missed up til the 3rd period. Doesn't look like I missed much:

+ Fleury, I thought he played well.

+ Kunitz-despite missing a good scoring chance, he still kept going and tied the game.

+Cooke-for shooting the puck

- The PP. It's awful. Can't score, and let's the other team score. Pathetic.

This team has no discipline. You have the lead with 1:30 left. Play conservatively. Don't turn the puck over.

Big minus to the PP unit that was on the ice at the end of the third. All five of them, the game doesn't end because you have a PP and the lead to play out the period. Staal just walked down the middle and nobody put a stick on him. Embarrassing effort and lack of concentration from all of them.

All in all I'm still not worried. The Penguins can dominate anyone. These problems will be fixed. The only weak link still is our goaltending. Fleury isn't going to make the big save for us ever again.

All true.

Adding:

+Michalek: He was fantastic until the last play of the game. great breakouts and strong in zone coverage.

+Martin: he played that two on one very well. If he had a ****ing back checker to support him he'd have 20 guys hugging his nuts right now for slowing down that play.

-Sid: Staal's goal is on you. Back checking is for everyone, even stars. Especially the centres. Especially with a one goal lead and less than 2 minutes to play.

Edit to add:
+Geno on offence. He's back. I don't care if he didn't score; he was flying out there.

Plus

• Flower seemed solid most of the game again, so he's progressing from where he was but that's not good enough if we're going to string some 4 and 5 game winning streaks together, which we need to do to win this division / get some home ice.

• Geno - if the MSG guys were fawning over him, he must've played well.

Not Plus

• This team has no fire in their belly at all. Zilch. Championship teams knock the crap out of someone and score the extra goal there, they don't give one up. When championship teams go up 3 goals, they're not happy until they're up 5. This team plays more like a bunch of seals than sharks. Speedy, swirling around, blood in the water... and nothing. Dear Disco: get some mean, instill some fire in this team, or leave.

+ Fleury. Played pretty well. All 3 goals were goofy- Crusher through about 6 bodies, Staal SHG looks deflected, and OT goal was effectively a 2-on-0.

+ Kunitz. Agree with above, he missed a few real good chances, but kept getting more chances. That's part of the battle.

- Malkin. He played OK overall...but ZERO reason to try to go thru the box on the PP with a minute left. No reason the Rangers should even touch the puck there. skate out the clock. Terrible decision.

- DB's constant line juggling.

- the PP that never was.

No sense of urgency or speed, always trying to get the perfect shot. Would it hurt to actually get a pass and just rip it at the net instead of thinking about it?

- Michalek

Just for that falling over yourself....is this what we paid $4M for? Might as well have Hall Gill over there.

- Comrie

Because he thinks that a pointless fight is going to save his job.

+ Malkin/Crosby effort.

They definitely tried...you can see how AHL we look when neither of them are on the ice.

Too angry to be objective right now.
Overall it seemed a very good performance to me though, outplaying the Rangers right, left and center. Just not their goalie.... and then mental midgetry at the end.

I don't think anybody should overreact to this loss. A great game by the Pens. Bad decision by the coaching staff not to put the grinders out there to close out that game. We didnt need to score and we had the wrong personel out there.

+ Letang: He had a lot of jump and was good against Gaborik all night long.

+ Malkin: Lazy at times, but I thought was flying out there

- Michalek: That stupid play in OT warrant you a minus Zbynek.

I really want to punch Goligoski in the face right now. If I see him wind up one more time and not shoot, I may actually punch a kitten.

A HUGE plus goes to Marc Staal, the best player by far tonight. He's so good. He'd be our No. 1 defenseman. Just saying.

Overall, the Pens played 'their game' tonight. But there's something missing with this team this year. They blow a ton of chances, they break down at the most inopportune time, there's no confidence in the starting goalie whatsoever, despite his recent strong play, and there are several dubious decisions made behind the bench.

Oh, and this is yet another game where Jordan Staal could have made a huge difference. The one area where I feel we miss him the most is when we have a lead to protect.

I am still baffled that Bylsma put Gogo in there at the end with less than two minutes to go, leading by a goal, and on the powerplay.... Letang is questionable too. And not someone like Martin at least... Did he think scoring another goal was really that necessary?

-Fleury, exhibit A http://www.nhl.com/ice/recap.htm?id=...id=DL|NHL|home

-45 million dollars invested in defense for this??? That OT goal was just horrible display of defense.

-Goligoski, his attempt to box out the defender on the first goal was pathetic.

Defense doesn't play defense, goalie doesn't make saves, not going to win to many games.

Oh yeah...forgot...

++ Lundqvist

He stood on his head, except for that Cooke goal.

It was definitely an entertaining game to watch. A bit weird how it all ended....weak goal to go up 2-1. Weak PP effort cause 2-2. I guess that balanced it out.

Overtime ends on D tripping up...ugh.

(-) Powerplay

Hard to win a game when you go 0-6 on the powerplay. This needs to be fixed because without a powerplay, how can you possibly expect to win a Stanely Cup yet alone, make the playoffs.

The Penguins had some positives but their downfalls overshadow them.

Not trying to start panic or act like the sky is falling but there is no way the Penguins make it back to the Finals with such a horrible powerplay.

Whenever you take yourself out of a 2 on 1, and turn it into a 2 on 0 is NEVER played well. All Martin has to do is take away the pass and let Fleury deal with the shooter.

Basic 2 on 1 Defense.

Jesus.

Would you give Fleury a break if he lets a bad goal in at a crucial moment?

+ Fleury wasn't bad. Not many goaltenders are stopping the last 2 goals let in. Hell the first one he was completely screened.

+ Letang was all over the ice.

+ Marc Staal is a beast.

+ Neutralizing Gaborik.

+ Lundvquist was good as usual.

- For as hard as Dupuis worked tonight, there were many times where he stifled offense. Offense on the first line with the best player in the world, Sid looked frustrated at one point. I hope Shero can pull a rabbit out of his ass and just get us 1 competent winger who would be a offensive threat.

- Martin for just being ok, I expect more from him. He looks slow.

- Michalek slipping and causing that 2 on 1.

- It's time to dump Comrie. It was a good no-risk signing for 500k, but its not working out.

- The powerplay makes me physically ill. What can we say that hasn't been said already. It flat out sucks.

I actually thought the defense was great tonight overall (I'm choosing to forget that OT ever happened and pin the loss on the late tying goal). Just an awful PP. Thats it.

With the leading scoring dman, Crosby, and Malkin on the same power play, we're stuck watching Goligoski skate circles along the blueline in perpetual indecision.
