Oilers want defense

DarrenDreger: Oilers are looking to upgrade their blue-line, but won't change their longterm plan to do it.

Ok. So they want defense. The untouchables up front are Eberle, Hall, Paajarvi and Hemsky.

The guys they might move for the right price would be Penner, Gagner.

Cogliano is off to a horrible start...Oilers fans, is Cogliano on the block for a d-man?

Buffalo may have what you need.

What type of D man? Young, old, PMD, 2way, stay at home?

Edit: There was an Edmonton scout at the Van/Buf game last night, along with a dozen others.
Was he there to scout Van or Buf is the question. Given that Buf is stocked at D this season.

some cheap options out there would be Bieksa or Hunwick.

I'd say yes Cogliano and Penner would be available but Gagner wouldn't be. Trading Gags would be plugging one whole by making another.

Defensive or two way.

We desperately need PK help.

Doubtful he was scouting Van too much, division rivals rarely help each other out.

Not a fan of either team, but what about...

To Edmonton: Bieksa

To Vancouver: Cogliano + 2nd in 2012

Chris Bulter comes to mind immediately.
He was splitting time with Andrej Sekera to start the season, but with Mike Weber waiting to crack the line up and Sekera now partnered up with Myers I would think Butler is the guy that would fit.

If Gagner or Penner are going then the D-Man coming back has to be 26 or younger (in other words young enough to actually be useful by the time the Oilers are ready to compete).

So that'll be pre-emptive "no's" to Komisarek, Beaucheman, etc. proposals, k?

It isn't working for Cogs in Edmonton, but I don't think the Oilers want to deal him to a divisional rival like Vancouver and have to deal with the headaches his speed could cause for the next 5+ years.

Hawks should jump on Butler. Cannot be worse than Boynton/Cullimore.

(I cry a little bit inside whenever I write "Boynton/Cullimore." )

Ouch. Have they stockpiled defensemen from around the league? The Oilers would be interested in a non-expensive defensive D with good PK record. If expensive then he should be on a short (1-2 years left) contract.

Any options other than Butler?

while we are rebuilding, this trade does not really help us right now. And unfortunately, right now we need a lot of help.

In case if people don't know our D pairings look something like this:

Whitney-Peckham
Smid-Foster
Strudwick-Gilbert

Vandermeer.

Other than Whitney and Peckham, the rest have been bad. Especially Gilbert.

Ew, I don't want Cogliano.

I could see Rozsival and Gilroy becoming available though.

Carl Gunnarson could be part of a package

I'd consider Gunarsson for Cogliano.

The Oilers need upgrades on defense, not bodies. So, sorry, no Bieksa. I wouldn't mind discussing Chris Butler in Buffalo, depending on what the Sabres want in return.

And to the OP, yes, Cogliano is certainly available in this deal. I could see Gagner being made available, but only for a long term solution who could play top defense pair. That won't be easy to come across, but perhaps a team that is completely stacked on defense may want to move a guy with top pair potential for a really good 2nd line center, and possible future top line center.

On a side note, if the Oilers move Gagner, it tells me that they are more interested in Courtier or Nugent Hopkins than Larsson. Just sayin.

I don't think he would. Burke's issue was never with Penner, it was with Lowe giving an offer to one of his players, who he liked, but could not afford to match the offer on. He was adimant that the contract was too big for what Penner had proven at that point, but Penner has played into his contract (along with the hit importance being lessened due to an increase in the cap).

So, I think Burke would make a move for Penner, depending on what that move is.

yea, Cogliano isn't very impressive at all.

In fact, he's on pace for a career low... 3rd straight season of regression on his part.

I'd do Gunner for Penner as the major pieces in a trade with Edmonton. Gunner gives them a good young d-man, Penner gives us a top-6 powerforward.
