Kesler was 25th, Bieksa was 3rd round, Edler was 3rd round, Schneider was 26th, and Hodgson was taken 10th, which is hardly a lottery pick to tank for.
Seeing as he said high draft picks AND dumb trades, I believe he's referring to the Luongo trade, which IMO Vancouver won in a landslide.

Maybe a pick or mid level prospect like (D) M.A. Gragnani?

Something along these lines?
It's a nice package, but I seriously believe that for the Oilers to move Gagner, it would have to be for a top line defenseman, a true number one. Something like Gagner, Omark and another big piece for Tyler Myers from Buffalo, or Erik Johnson/Jack Johnson/Alex Peitreangelo (sp?). Not that I think it will happen, but that's what Edmonton would be looking for.

Well... Vancouver and Florida have done a lot of deals over the years

Finished Bure for Jovanovski

Finished Bertuzzi (didn't play all season, left as ufa iirc) for Luongo

Grabner (got waived), Bernier (salary dump) for Ballard

But if the GM is good enough to make another GM give up valuable pieces for pretty much nothing, that's still a good move and I feel is far more respectable than tanking for picks. That being said, Burke nabbing both Sedins at 2nd + 3rd overall (while the Thrashers took Patrick Stefan) is likely one of the single greatest draft-day deals in history.

McCabe + a 1st in 2000 to Chicago for 4th overall
4th overall + two 3rd round picks to Tampa Bay for 1st overall
1st overall to Atlanta for 2nd overall and a few picks as long as he didn't draft a Sedin

Burke drafts Daniel 2nd overall and Henrik 3rd overall

Supposedly this all came to fruition about twenty minutes before the draft started

Then lets counter that.
What about this.

(C) Tim Connolly - 4.5 mil, UFA
(RW) Drew Stafford - 1.9 mil, RFA
(D) Chris Butler - 850k, RFA

for

Dustin Penner
2nd or 3rd rd draft pick

I am not even sure if Penner can be had. Is he still playing RW or did he get shifted to LW?

So, basically to get to the root of your argument...the 99 season where the Canucks were horrible is a lot different than what the Oilers have done over the last full season because we are tanking on purpose but the 99 team was just bad? Our team is horrible, but do you really think the guys in the lockerroom care about getting a high pick? I'm pretty sure the rookies are trying to win a Calder, Penner is trying to prove he can be a 30-30-60 guy in back-to-back years, Hemmer is coming off a season ending injury, as is Khabby, and Horcoff is coming of his worst season in the last 5 or 6...these guys want to play well and they aren't intentionally playing poorly...just like the Canucks in 99, we are THAT bad

How old are you and did you ever see Pavel Bure play in Florida, let alone Vancouver? His first two full seasons in Florida he had almost 60 goals both years. I try not to get my panties in a knot over people posting on the internet but sometimes completely asinine statements cause me to react like this.

Penner can be had I am guessing. He has always been more of a LW, and has played there all year. I think the trade is close, but don't expect Edmonton to trade a pick.

Connolly
Stafford
Butler
Rivet

for

Penner
Cogliano
Strudwick

Ok. So they want defense. The untouchables up front are Eberle, Hall, Paajarvi and Hemsky.

The guys they might move for the right price would be Penner, Gagner.

Cogliano is off to a horrible start...Oilers fans, is Cogliano on the block for a d-man?
To EDM:

Gunnarsson

To TOR:
Penner
Omark
3rd Round Pick

Leafs Fans

To get that type of package from Edmonton, you would probably have to clone Gunnarsson and give us both of them and throw in the girl from your avatar

This is a very fair value trade. I'm actually surprised you added Strudwick.
I would have gone with an AHLer. My hats off to you. And if I am Regier from Buffalo, I would seriously consider this given the Offensive woes we are experiencing.

If you're offering

Actually, never mind. I didn't realize the contract was so long.

if the connolly/stafford/butler was doable without the pick, I wouldn't mind it. cog's is really rock bottom, not sure how i feel trading him right now...he does eventually have to go.

I think accepting that Cogliano is what he is and nothing more has to be done. By the same token, still don't like the trade. All just parts
