The science of Shea Weber's slap shot

I think we are all in agreement that Zeus has stopped flinging Lightning Bolts and has switched to a more powerful weapon by pointing to a spot and saying, "Shea, Hit that."

Good article. It seems a 5foot8 player would never be able to reach the same speeds as a 6foot6 player due to the angular velocity, and length of the stick. Always fun to hear the net-tearing puck story one more time too. Thanks fatcat.

Very cool, and informative, article about Weber and what makes a great slapshot.

Franson has a solid shot -- hard to argue with his offensive production this year. But based on his recorded Angluar Velocity (405 degrees/second), he is quite a bit behind Weber (715) and Tootoo (668).

According to the biomechanical evaluation, the velocity is generated in part by a player's height and "the tremendous amount of core strength, the strength of his abdominals, the muscles that stabilize his trunk"

Tootoo's velocity is also much higher than Franson's despite Jordin's shorter frame.

Given Weber and Tootoo's core strength it is no wonder why their checks are so effective.

Maybe his weaker frame/core strength explains Franson's lack of physical play. Sounds like Franson needs to work on his core strength.
