my projected 2011/2012 lineup

ALFIE SPEZZA SEMIN!!!!

REGIN RICHARDS OVECHKIN

FUHR STAAL SKINNER

NEIL KELLY RUUTU

SICKEST D EVER

CHARA - GOD

JESUS - GONCHAR

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS - CAMPOLI

VOKOUN
DAREN PANG
I am a little confused. How does campoli beat out Karlsson for a roster spot? Unless you are implying Karlsson is Jesus in which case why do you have him playing the left side AND with Gonchar, another offensive defenseman? Lastly, is Fuhr left handed? I would prefer to not have him on his off wing but maybe that is just me. Just some of the more obvious flaws in your plan, i didnt really want to pick it apart that much.

FUHR plays anywhere he wants as long as it's with Staal and Skinner

Moulson (3.5) - Spezza (7) - Butler (1.5)
Michalek (4.3) - Fisher (4.2) - Alfredson (5.6)
Foligno (1.2) - Regin (1) - Kovalev (3)
Z. Smith (.750) - Kelly (2.1) - Neil (2)/Winchester (.750)

Phillips (3) - Gonchar (5.5)
Kuba (3.7) - Karlsson (1.3)
Rundblad (1.5) - Carkner (.7)/Hale (.6) or Lee if he hasn't been traded.

Elliott (1.5) - Budaj (1.5) - if the cap goes up sign a better goalie.

Salaries = $56.2 mil + $2 mil (buyouts) + injuries ($1.2 mil) = $59.4 mil
Does that make us any better though? Pretty much treading water and overpaying Moulson.

I'd really like to see us get a top echlon player as a UFA and even let Phillips walk if that player is a defenceman.

If Markov is not resigned by July 1st and seems healthy I sign him. Or possibly Pitkanen. If Richards is available I try to sign him.

It is very possible that we can't sign a higher tier free agent and if so I target a few mid-tier free agents.

LW Andrew Brunette would look great in the top 6. Sign him for 2 years 5-6 million total.

LW Jussi Jokinen I would consider for a 3 year deal at maybe $7-8 million total.

LW Marco Sturm if he is healthy I consider at a 2 year $4-5 million total range.

I would like us to get a LW.

Ideally:

Brunette - Spezza - Butler
Michalek - Regin - Alfredsson
Foligno - Fisher - Neil
Ruutu - Kelly - Winchester
Shannon/Smith

Markov - Karlsson
Kuba - Gonchar
Cowen/Rundblad - Campoli
Carkner

Elliott
Cheaper UFA backup/Lehner/Brodeur

Resign Ruutu, Shannon
Let Kovalev, Phillips, Hale, Lee all walk.

I like Phillips but if we can upgrade we definately need to do so. If Rundblad or Cowen or Wierioch are ready we can let Kuba or Campoil walk the following season.

I was thinking that the league puts too high a premium on youth these days. Maybe we can exploit that and trade away a young boom-or-bust type player for a proven older player on decent terms? It's a bit of a risk, but teams value young players so much that we might be able to fleece them on a deal.

My whole point of this thread is not to let Kovalev, Lee, Campoli, Kuba and Ruutu walk for nothing. They all have value my point is trade them if the right offer comes along. Build this team up for the next 2 years even if you have to sacrifice this season and let some of the young players get some experience.

Volchenkov walked and we signed Gonchar who is better. There is no need to trade players at the deadline if this is a playoff team. Players walk andto me it is not a big deal. If we are not in a position to make the playoffs and we want to deal some players that we don't want to resign then ok do it. I think this IS A PLAYOFF team so I don't think we should trade anyone.

Ruutu is an important part of the team and he will likely be cheap and he is not replaceable easily. Who else is going to bite the other team, or scare the crap out of reporters with a puck on a stick at the Sens Skills competition? Seriously if we had dealt Neil before he was UFA in the non-playoff year and not resigned him it is possible we would not have made the playoffs last season. The Ruutu-Kelly-Neil line was that important last season.

I think many posters here are FAR too concerned with random 2nd and 3rd round picks. You trade them if you have a playoff team and getting them is nice if you can but really it is about scouting and development not the actual picks. A pick is nothing if you don't pick the right player with it. A pick really has no value until it is used.

I don't want to trade any of the players we have for futures because I want to make the playoffs this season and EVERY season. Some posters think it is better to lose and get a high first rounder or trade for some picks and prospects than win and make the playoffs.

I would do some serious snooping around Edmonton in regards to Hemsky. They're doing a serious rebuild over there and guys like him might not want stay there for that nonsense. I don't know if he's been in the playoffs more than once.

To pick up Hemsky, I wouldn't mind losing any of Fisher, Michalek, Foligno, Lee and Kuba.

Now I am the last person who believes trade rumors, but if ottawa could have traded Volchenkov for this package, which was rumored.

To Washington:

Anton Volchenkov
Shean Donovan

To Ottawa:

Karl Alzner
Matt Bradley
Brian Pothier
Washington 2nd

How much better would this team's d-fence be right now, Alzner is exacly what this d-fence is missing. Can you imagine having

Alzner
Cowen
Karlsson
Rundblad
Wiercioch

all in the system.

That is the forward thinking that this team lacks.

Your sort of contradicting yourself. Why would the Oilers trade a Hemsky for a Michalek, who can't skate or pass anymore, and for a Fisher. Seems pretty lateral. To acquire Hemsky your going have to trade a Cowen, Weircioch, Butler or picks.
