If this happens it will be the second time that Atlanta has lost an NHL franchise. Who would think that they'd get a third chance? It's a major city where the game hasn't taken.
And if I'm remembering right--Winnipeg didn't lose the Jets to Phoenix because of lack of fan support. They lost it because of arena issues. Now that they have a new arena--with luxury boxes etal. and with the strengthened Canadian dollar and with a strong fan base they should have no problems for the forseeable future being able to support an NHL team.
Actually the arena issue in Winnipeg PLUS the lack of fan support cost them the team. Attendance numbers not much different than Phoenix. Well documented out here.
If the new owners inflate the payroll to the salary cap, the GM will have a lot of money to spend, which is unusual in today’s NHL. At present, the Thrashers have 15 players under contract for a payroll of $35.9-million. If the cap rises from $59.4-million to almost $64-million as expected, Dudley will have $28-million in cap space.
But before he chases the scorer and defenceman through free agency or a trade, Dudley has to sign several Thrashers who will become free agents on July 1. The most important ones will be restricted free agents Ladd, Blake Wheeler and Anthony Stewart, who are all forwards, and defenceman Zach Bogosian. The notable unrestricted free agents are forward Radek Dvorak and defencemen Freddy Meyer.
Dudley said he is “comfortable” about his chances of signing Ladd, Wheeler, Stewart and Bogosian after talking to them since the end of the season. He admitted he did not raise the possibility of a move to Winnipeg but thinks that may not change any of the players’ minds.

Told now Andrew Ladd's extension was never agreed to. Not huge reach to get it done but he will want to see who's running the show in WPG.

Pierre LeBrun reported something similar a few weeks ago. Ladd is from Western Canada. Running the show? He shouldn't have been comfortable with Waddell and Dudley running the show in Atlanta. Dudley is signed long term. He got a 4 year extension recently. Winnipeg should hire Paul Fenton as their GM.
would absolutely LOVE to get either ladd or wheeler or both if they are available...but i assume they will resign.
the idea of the new owners spending to the cap is interesting though...i'm not sure what that situation looks like, and they will probably sellout regardless of how bad the team is just cause they are back...but if they are willing to spend they could make a MAJOR splash going after richards to show fans that they are looking to put a winning team on the ice.

But how much would other teams offer them that we wouldn't match?
2-3 million? We may match it, but it will make them more expensive than they should be.
Regardless I match unless it is 3.5 or higher. Anisimov has shown that he has the ability to be a top 2 center, and Sauer is already a sound top-4 guy.

Its finally June. Buyout period begins in two weeks. June 15-30. Upper limit will be set on June 24 which is the same day as the first round of the draft. Qualifying offers are due by June 27. Free agency on July 1. Arbitration filing date on July 5 which will take the filing players off the market.

Offer sheets are fruitless. The team matches unless its for crazy Dustin Penner money. All it does is drive up prices for all of the group IIs including the team giving the offer sheet.

It's possible that we will trade for Richards' rights and try to sign him during the buyout period. If it seems like something can be worked out, then we execute the buyouts. If we aren't trading for his rights, we'll have to do the buyouts and hope for the best.
We may get a 2nd buyout period because of arbitration, but I don't think we can count on that, and it may come too late in the offseason to help us.

The Rangers will need to move money if they sign Richards and re-sign all of their group IIs to add other players. Wolski and Avery are cheap buyouts. You want to see the same team next season. Next years FA class will be re-signed by their current teams. The CBA expires after next season. Get Richards into the fold. Trade for his rights and sign him before July 1. The Rangers can't keep waiting for next year every year. The young players have some experience under their belts. Add a #1 center. Look to add a winger with size. Add another good D. Let's go.

I'm of the opinion that either Drury or Wolski does get bought out just to give the team wiggle room, but the situation is workable without doing it, although much more tricky to manage. You never want to be in a position of burying guys in the minors who should have made the team.

my math puts those totals at 64.5 mil over the cap...but mind=blown that without buying out drury or wolski and giving fairly generous raises to the RFAs, it almost fits under the cap
