Here’s a funny little scene from today’s morning skate, as the Red Wings prepared to host the St. Louis Blues tonight at Joe Louis Arena.

Johan Franzen has just one goal in his past seven games, not a big deal given the ups and downs of an 82-game season. But when told by a reporter, “Nick says you should shoot more,” Franzen laughed and had a question: Which Nick?

Told it was Nicklas Lidstrom, not Niklas Kronwall, Franzen was OK.

“So it’s true then,” Franzen said, smiling. “If Kronner would have said it, I would have said bull.

“No, I am trying to shoot more when I get a chance.”

Patrick Eaves is the odd man out tonight, as his name came up in the rotation with Drew Miller. “It’s not easy,” Eaves said. “But you don’t worry about it. Things will work out. We’ve just got to keep getting wins as a team.”

Jimmy Howard is starting in goal, with Joey MacDonald backing up. Chris Osgood (groin) did not go on the ice at all today.

And a cool note to close out: Tonight marks Ken Holland’s 1,000th game as general manager of the Wings. If the Wings win, it’ll be his 600th career victory.

Fun Stuff
Pavel Datsyuk in his rookie season against St. Louis!

Sensational!

The early schedule has been absent of divisional games...this is a nice early season matchup. The Blues are playing well so far but they've had some bad luck with some injuries to key guys.

Halak has shown some signs that he's human. That 6 goals on Monday against the Avs is an abnormality...he'll play much better tonight but he's struggled in the divisional games so far.

It kind of was. I had to look up and down 3 times to find it.

Any how this one of those games they need to win in regulation. No 3 point game tonight please.

I see you have another mistake that's gone unnoticed by some here

Hint: one of the birth places.

EDIT: Actually two birth locations, and I'm not talking about umlauts.

is this a joke? do you expect people to memorize NHL players birth locations?

It's as in typos.

EDIT: Ok, not to nitpick or anything, but the unintentional mistakes are the fun ones to find IMO. Such as:

Patrik Berglund being from Vesteras, although it's in fact (and even later on in the post) Vasteras without the umlauts.

Ian Cole's POB is Ann Arbour, although it's in fact Ann Arbor.

Jaroslav Halak's POB is Bratislava, SVN. SVN is the ISO code for Slovenia, whereas Halak is from Slovakia (ISO code SK).

Jiri Hudler's POB is Czechoslovakia, yet other Czechs and Slovaks are listed from either Czech Republic or Slovakia. Czechoslovakia wasn't split until in 1993.

Also, both Russia (Russian SFSR) and Belarus were in fact members of the USSR back when Salei, Datsyuk and Nikitin were born.

And right about now I feel like a complete dick. It's just that I find the more difficult mistakes more fun to spot. I think I shall do it quietly from now on then.

Again, no intention to nitpick, but I seem to do it despite that. These GDT's are absolutely awesome.

This is going to be a tough game IMO. First the Wings will need to shake off the rust from the extended period where they didn't play and secondly St. Louis are a really good team.

I guess losing Oshie and Perron will hinder them a bit, since they are good forwards, but they shouldn't be taken lightly. I can't stop thinking they are similar to Phoenix in a way. They have excellent goaltending and they have players who can be really dangerous for them.

We had a terrible record against St. Louis last year (two of those games were in Europe though), so I hope to see a better game tonight.

The people in the spotlight IMO are the three on the top line. At times they have been awesome putting pressure on the opposition, but they need to bury their chances. Jimmy will need to match Halak and our defense needs to be on their toes.

A good 60 minute effort would be nice.

Let's Go Red Wings!

It hasn't been disastrous since Rafalski has gotten back, so why now? Ericsson is playing fine (sometimes great) and Rafalski is chipping in where he should be. Salei has been a good acquistion and let's Kronwall focus on the offensive side.

I'm not sure of the stats, but since Rafalski has been back and they've been running with these pairings, I think Stuart and Lidstrom have conceded the most goals (at ES and PK)

It's not going to happen unless they have fitness issues or we are comfortably in the lead in the standings. This is the "problem" when we have a healthy squad (knock on wood), players need to rotate in and out with disrupting the chemistry on all lines (unless it is needed). Eaves and Miller have a similar role on the team so it's easy to rotate them and keep them game fit too.

For the fans on here, yes, it would make sense to bench Homer or Modano for a game (especially back to back games), but Babcock has assigned a role for them (mostly PP roles) so he needs them on the ice. When they click, it's going to be awesome.

Why would Babcock sit someone in the top 9 for a 4th liner? Modano is playing better, Holmstrom is one game removed from a two-goal game. Eaves and Miller are virtually the same player (there's arguments both ways) I'm just curious to see what happens when Draper gets back. Especially when both sit for him.

I wish they were healthy. I've been impressed by them so far, and it would have been a great test for both teams. On the other hand, it is anything but an easy 2 points with Halak in net. I'd be happy for DRW to come away with a regulation W.

Predicting 4-2: Cleary(en), Bertuzzi, Zetterberg, Rafalski

Is Boyes in or out? Didn't see him listed.

If that happens, then I'll have a problem with Babcock. I am pretty sure Draper won't bring anything to the team when he plays. Eaves and Miller can offer the same and much much more. It would be a waste to sit those two for a guy like Draper.

I'm sure Draper is great role-model, a hard worker, a nice presence in the locker room and a good leader, but that's all off ice. On ice, he isn't as effective as the others.

I saw that too...Sobotka is a 1st line center? I don't see any injury news on him. Maybe Payne is sitting him because he's been fairly mediocre.
