Marc-Andre Bergeron to Tampa?

Quote:
The agent for rehabbing defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron said he has spoken to Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman, and characterized Tampa Bay's interest as "serious," though Paul Corbeil added that both sides are doing their homework to see if Bergeron, a free agent, would be a good fit.

"I'm sure he could be a good asset for the Lightning," Corbeil said Wednesday. "They're a good team and having a very good beginning of the year. I think it would be a very nice fit with Guy Boucher and the coaching staff." (...)

"I'd say they are serious," Corbeil said of the Lightning. "They are doing their homework about Marc-Andre, and I am doing it about them. I think it would be a good match."

He also played a couple of games for Hamilton last year, where... you guessed it... Boucher was working as head coach at the time.

I think he'd be a good fit here, but the problem is we already have 7 Defensemen. Somebody would have to go and we can't just send someone down to Norfolk. Their blue line is already too crowded. (Quick, Wishart, Jackson, Gudas, Barberio, Vernace, Roy, Milam, Mihalik)

Odd man out is Smaby. Just seems like he doesn't fit here anymore and when dressed, gets very limited ice time.

he can't be worse than smaby.

And he would probably play better than Clark in the point of PP so... well, wouldn't mind him here.

Yeah, and imagine having Bergeron come off the bench as PP specialist for like 5 minutes per game instead of Smaby totalling 5 minutes per game on EV.

Stamkos - Gagne/Malone/Downie - Lecavalier/Purcell
Bergeron - St. Louis

Where's the problem? Get Bergeron and send Smaby to the Flyers. Holmgren loves our D-men.

We're 6th in the league on the PP (23%)

Clark isn't putting up the same points there as he was at the start of the season, but still...why?

2 for 3 on the PP tonight. 6th in the league. I dont think we need a PPQB Specialist as much as a lot of you seem to think.

If its a one year deal and cheap I guess it couldnt hurt but Im not really all gung ho over getting him.

1 year, vet min. I'd rather have him than Smaby.

Exactly, what could it hurt? There's always room for improvement.

He won't be very expensive, he earned 0.750m last season and comes back from injury.

He is a PMD which is something we really could use. Even as a bottom pair guy.

So why did they get rid of Foster?

I would be good with this.

Because Foster didn't want to be playing just as a power play specialist. He'll get more playing time in Edmonton.

I support MAB. It can't hurt to have players in your roster like that. I am sure it will be a one year deal at near minimum.

Put me in as a MAB supporter at league minimum getting a handful of minutes on the PP. Than again I'm also a fan of acquiring Souray on reentry waivers.

I am iffy on that. While a cap hit at $2.5 Million (is claiming a re-entry waiver player only half cap hit for the season in which you claim him or all season thereafter as well?) is appealing I am just not sure I think he is a fit. :p

Not entirely sure what his exact cap hit on re-entry should be since his actual salary this season and next season is 4.5 million(2.7 million I believe cap hit I believe), but I think its an incredible value for what he brings and for what we need.

His cap hit is $5.4 Million.

A player that is claimed on re-entry waivers has his cap hit split between the two teams. So his cap hit would be $2.7 Million. The thing I can't remember is if that reduced cap hit is only for the first season in which a player is claimed.

If the case is that the cap relief is only for the first season than I don't really think he is a fit. I wouldn't feel comfortable spending $5.4 Million in cap space on Souray next year.
