Red Wings Media Tracker

While Malik has been out the past 2 months finding good Red Wings related material has been a chore. So I was thinking we should start a thread where we post articles/features/blogs we find to make things easier for everyone. We could also keep track of a list of links that we check daily for articles.

Links:
Mlive
Red Wings Official Website
Detroit Freep Press
Detroit News
Yahoo Sports
Red Wings Central
Red Wings Central Media Watch
Sports Illustrated

yup I seriously miss Malik it's not even funny. Though I don't mind missing his NHLPA vs NHL rambling. I think Wings should pay him or someone to do sometime like that again. Money well spent I would say.

I agree Malik may not have had the best opinions, but at least he would conveniently post every story he found. It was quite the luxury.

And I know its kind of early, but I thought their would be more interest in this?

Also the Lidstrom article in the first post is a great read. It has some really interesting quotes (from a european scout talking about Lidstrom in his draft year) and was quite funny too.

I think one of you guys with time on your hands should start an "information clearinghouse blog."
Maybe the mods could sticky a link to it
maybe you could use the hfboards blogger function to do it.

I found Malik's blog to be very useful, even if he was way too much in love with his writing and adored the Wings in a fanboy way, way too much.

If I had the time I would be all for that, but at the moment I don't even have the time to keep up with the Red Wings prospect tracker! It would be best in my opinion if everyone was free to post links, because it would put less pressure on me to keep up if I am pressed on time (I wish people did that with the prospect tracker but they can't really edit my first post).

Hi everyone....I'm Mark Spizzirri and I blog about the Red Wings at the much criticized Hockeybuzz.com

I know many fans aren't fans of Eklund and his trade rumors, however I myself attempt to write opinion-based blogs on the Wings based on my insight from watching their games.

I guess my question for Red Wings fans is what are you looking for from a blogger when you read their blogs? Are you looking for that insider information that usually comes from members of the mainstream media?

OR are you just looking for good coverage and insight and a place similar to the boards here where you can share your opinion with other Red Wing fans?

Regards,
Mark Spizzirri

P.S. I miss Malik as well as he provided an easy spot to research a plethora of Wings information/articles. Hope George gets well soon and is able to return.

We don't mind an independent writer, any insightful source with good information, discussions, etc is welcome. Just get the hell out of hockeybuzz.com (With all due respect...). Associating yourself with Eklund will draw only backlash and worse criticism from the masses, despite what your blogs may say.

I personally enjoy the blocks that keep up to date with the Red Wings prospects but I can't really expect that out of bloggers because their are so many to follow. Besides that Malik is the only blog I ever read since BDS has been gone.

Thanks for the feedback. I have thought several times about starting my own website. Problem is I have been able to parlay my association to hockeybuzz.com to work with XM Radio Home Ice and use that to obtain media credentials at various levels.

I will likely give it more thought at the end of this season however.

Thanks,
Mark

Comfortable Howard reaching potential

Quote:
He also learned good practice habits. Like a lot of top goalies, Howard is as intense in practice as he is during games -- which Wings forward Johan Franzen has found out about the hard way.

"I can't score on him," Franzen said, laughing. "It's like, 'Please Jimmy, let me score once in a while ... c'mon.'"

Wings remain in elite company

Red Wings hit the road to take on Atlanta Thrashers

Quote:
The Wings closed practice with a 1-on-1 drill down at one end of the rink with both goalies.

"I was going to skate them a little bit, but they skate themselves and this way they have more fun doing it," Babcock said. "It’s a good activity.

"Protecting the puck is such a huge part of the game," Babcock added. "It's got a bunch of skills important to the game and the guys have fun with it and compete hard in it."

A number of interesting matchups took place, including Cleary and Datsyuk.

"He tests every ability you've got," Cleary said. "It's fun for guys who have the puck all the time. It's no fun if you're constantly trying to get it back. The key is getting the puck right away. If you get it right away at least you have a chance, especially against Pavel."

Joey MacDonald also got a chance to shoot on Jimmy Howard.

"I had no passes so I just waited and walked right in and tried to score," MacDonald said. "I think he knew where I was going."

The players at the blueline kept yelling for MacDonald to shoot the puck.

"That's something as a goalie you don't hear too often," MacDonald said. "I was trying to go high glove on him. I was going to go five-hole, but I wanted to make it look good if I was going to score. Then I was more worried about getting back to my net after he made the save."

Valtteri Filppula hopes to heat up like Red Wings' other forwards

Quote:
Filppula acknowledges he's a little frustrated, saying, "just trying to do the right things and play the best I can. I hope the points start coming as well."

He had six points in his first seven games (two goals, four assists) and clicked with linemates Johan Franzen and Todd Bertuzzi. After shuffling his lines frequently the past few games, Babcock had Filppula, Franzen and Bertuzzi together again during Tuesday's practice.

Red Wings, defenseman Gleason Fournier agree to entry-level contract

Quote:
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The Detroit Red Wings signed defenseman Gleason Fournier to a three-year entry-level contract.

He will play for the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins next season.
Red Wings coach Mike Babcock: Mike Modano's mood sour after wrist surgery

Red Wings start West Coast swing in good shape

Quote:
It's worded differently, but the gist of it is: Why are you still so good? Weren't you supposed to be in decline by now?

It was no different after Monday's practice at HP Pavilion. The last time the Red Wings were in San Jose, they were eliminated in Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals by the Sharks, leading some to wonder if their two-decade run of excellence was nearing an end.

Instead, they have come back stronger. The Red Wings have passed the quarter pole of the season in excellent shape as they begin a three-game West Coast trip Tuesday against the Sharks.

At 15-4-2, Detroit leads the Western Conference with 32 points and has played the fewest games in the NHL (21).

"I guess when you're at the top, there's only one direction to go, eh?" Babcock said. "So that (the Red Wings' demise) is pretty easy to speculate.

...

Babcock figures it's a good time to get out of the house.

"We need to get on the road, we've been at home too much. Even my wife tells me we've been at home too much," Babcock said. "I imagine (players' wives are feeling like that, so it'll be good for the fellas."
It's time for Valtteri Filppula to add some offense

Quote:
Babcock believes Filppula can become an elite two-way player in the NHL. Broach that subject with Filppula and you'll get a sheepish grin and some embarrassment.

After Sunday's victory over Columbus, in which Filppula scored for the second straight game, Babcock again praised Filppula.

...

Interesting insight from Babcock regarding Todd Bertuzzi, who shut down Columbus star Rick Nash in the two weekend victories.

Bertuzzi had a reputation as a weak defensive player before arriving in Detroit.

"Bertuzzi is one of these guys everyone said isn't good defensively," Babcock said. "But he's been very good defensively. He played head- to -head against Nash in two games and did an unbelievable job. I have a lot of respect for Nasher, but I thought Bert was fantastic.

"That's just one example. If you commit your play away from the puck, you have the puck a whole lot."

Mike Babcock keeps Red Wings' fast start in perspective

Quote:
"I want to be real careful that we don't sound that excited," Wings coach Mike Babcock said Friday morning when discussing the team's start. "I've found over the years coaching in this league, as soon as you think you get excited about your team, then you lose four in a row. I find that being a little scared is a good way to live.
Red Wings' Justin Abdelkader impresses as a sub for injured Mike Modano

Henrik Zetterberg: Team looks forward to fun game vs. Sharks

Quote:
"We're looking forward to playing against them because they're always fun games, they're always high-paced and a lot of action," Henrik Zetterberg said Monday at HP Pavilion. "It's one of the games you look forward to, especially here. We have a good chance of getting a good start to this trip with a good game and two points."
The Sharks, whose injured include Devin Setoguchi, Niclas Wallin and Kent Huskins, rolled out a 3-0 lead in the series and won, 4-1.
"We weren't close; 4-1 is not close," coach Mike Babcock said. "They won the specialty teams battle, we took too many penalties, and they won all the face-offs. We had lots of opportunity, and we didn't do anything with it. They were better than us."
Red Wings' Mike Modano talks about wrist injury for first time

Quote:
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Red Wings forward Mike Modano knew the second he looked into his glove just how bad his injury was. All he saw was blood.

Modano spoke Monday for the first time since undergoing surgery Saturday to repair a severed tendon and nerve damage in his right wrist. He was hurt last Friday night when he was cut accidentally by the skate of Columbus forward R.J. Umberger.

"Once the skate hit me, the pain was really sharp, and I knew something was wrong," Modano said in a telephone interview with the Free Press. "When I looked in the glove and saw the type of bleeding there was, I knew something was really wrong. I knew it wasn't going to be good news."

For starters, Modano is looking at eight weeks in a cast that immobilizes his arm. Modano said specialist who performed the operation, Dr. Richard Singer, is "very hands-on and is concerned not just about me playing hockey again but about my quality of life."

...

"I'd be devastated if my career ends like this," he said. "Hopefully I can come back and play. But this has been a real bummer."

...

It's part of the dramatic recovery Modano faces. Instead of being with his teammates tonight in San Jose as they take on the Sharks, Modano is holed up at his suburban Detroit home, looking at a probable eight weeks in a cast that has immobilized his entire right arm.

"I'm learning to eat left-handed," he said. "I'm pretty limited."

...

Seven of Modano's eight points have come this month, which saw him center at times the best line, between Todd Bertuzzi and Danny Cleary.

"That was the whole bummer thing about this," Modano said. "I was really starting to feel good. I was getting a real grasp on the style and system. But now that I know I'm capable of it, I'm encouraged because I know it's just a matter of getting back in shape again. So I feel better about that when I do come back."

Modano said he might be able to start a comeback in February, but it wasn't certain. The injury was severe, and before any tangible time lines are drawn up, Modano said Singer wanted to see how the wrist healed. Right now, Modano is just dealing with his whole arm being sore, right down to his fingertips. Next he hopes to be around Joe Louis Arena when the Wings return from their three-game trip.

"As soon as I can, I'll be around, showing my face," he said. "I was having a lot of fun with them, and they've all been really supportive. Hopefully I can be back playing with them again."
San Jose Sharks facing a resurgent Detroit Red Wings team

Quote:
"We've heard that for numerous years, not just after last year," defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom said about predictions of their demise. "When we're healthy, there's no reason why we can't play as well as we have in the past. We want to be the best team in the West, and we certainly believe we should be."

The Red Wings say revenge for the playoff loss doesn't provide added motivation for their first meeting with the Sharks this season. But several players and coach Mike Babcock made it clear that they enjoy proving wrong the idea that the team was on the decline.

"When you're at the top, there's only one direction to go, eh?" Babcock said. "So it's pretty easy to speculate that. You don't have to be very smart. But we take great pride that, year after year, we're right there with the best teams."

...

But to understand why the Red Wings have been so relentlessly good, you have to look at the guys not wearing skates.

Detroit did lose franchise icon Steve Yzerman, who left in the offseason to run the upstart Tampa Bay Lightning. But Babcock and longtime front-office talent evaluators Ken Holland and Jim Nill all received contract extensions.

That sort of stability at the top has made the Red Wings one of the best organizations in all of professional sports. And it's why McLellan, a former Red Wings assistant, scoffs that anybody would have thought the playoff loss signified a franchise in decay.

"Anybody who has a real sense of hockey knows that wasn't going to happen," McLellan said. "They lost a series. It happens to every team. It was nice for us to win, but it could have gone either way."
