He probably thought they were going to lose to the Penguins either way so starting Cam vs. the Predators tomorrow is the best way to maximize the point total in this weekends games.

There's three ways to look at this:

1. The Penguins are going to score. It's a simple fact of this upcoming game. So would you rather have them score against a mentally fragile goaltender like Ward (who just has a stellar record of keeping it together against teams in the upper echelon of the conference ) or would you rather have Peters out there, playing the role that every backup for year has played: Try and stop as much as you can, if not, don't worry about it.

2. The Predators have trouble scoring. I won't say they can't, because despite the reputation that gets passed around about them, they do have some weapons. If Ward does play that game, it might just be the boost he needs. Positionally sound hockey should work against them.

3. Finally, the game is in Pennsylvania. How many injuries have we had in that state over the past "X" years? And how many injuries has Ward had over the past couple? And what are the chances those two factors collide in tonight's game? Small, but not zero. Better safe than sorry.

Or it's ****ing brilliant if the Pens light up the alternatively hot/cold Hurricanes team tonight, then Cam Ward can come in on Saturday night against this team you say cannot score and looks awesome, solidifying his confidence and getting him back on track.

or you start Cam tonight and see if he's on like last game and we win and then Peters tomorrow night against a team that can't score and we win that game too...

So we are playing for a max 2 points instead of a max 4... At least that's how I see it... Sort of playing not to lose rather than to win... I hate that...

First thing I was thinking. Ward needs to build his confidence at this point so save him for Nashville rather then risk to a blowout and a game that goes from "decent chance of winning" to "who knows what's going to happen" if Ward is off his game.

Whereas with Peters, the kid could be thinking "oh **** oh **** oh ****", but also saying "now's my time to shine". Hey, it's not like this has never happened before (see fainting goat vs San Jose).

Or option 49) Peters starts and forgets he's the goalie and once again wanders aimlessly over to the sideboards to look at the fans/nice new arena. After he lets in his 4 or 5 goals, Cam is thrown in cold to suffer the brutal beating handed to us from the Pens. Then he still gets to play tomorrow night...

I'm gonna agree with SVT here. We need all the points we can get and giving 2 to a team who isn't very good in their own building (4-5-1) is just plain disgraceful. Say we're playing "Team X" tonight, forget it's the Penguins, if "Team X" is sporting a 4-5-1 record on their home ice, then you would start Cam every night, right?

Option 50: We quit treating our 6 million dollar goalie like a mentally fragile baby and start him in both games giving us the best chance to get 4 points.

That's what's fun about hoping the Canes win a game like this...it's two wins in one. A) The Hurricanes win (!) and B) all y'all haters get a serious dose of ****.

With your way, you win no matter what, but you only get one. Enjoy it.

Oh I'll be happy as hell if we win... I'm just hoping MAF is in goal and we can win some sort of a 5-4 decision....

You guys do realize that Peters is 2-0 against the Pens right? Maybe that has something to do with it and Maurice is just being his usual cagey self and having some fun with the media.

And before you all jump down my throat that "2-0 doesn't mean anything" just throwing out another option. Option 51

Or maybe the staff wants Peters to start so Cam can study how the defense looks with White on the ice and see his tendencies. Who knows? Peters has looked pretty good except when he went for a walk the other night during play.

Stay close to the goal, PeteDawg.

It never ceases to amaze me the lack of confidence shown in this team by its own fans. Everyone acts as if it is a foregone conclusion that we will lose.

Last game everyone was saying 7-1 Sens and 7-2 Sens. We won 7-1. Have a little confidence.

The Pens haven't been setting the world on fire. I think the team shows up with Peters in goal and a couple of new players in the lineup.

4-3 Canes and somebody punch Malkin in the mouth (punk).

I'm cool with Peters starting. If Cam started tonight and tomorrow people would be beatching that we are playing Cam too much. Nothing wrong with getting Peters in net. Plus, I'd rather have Cam in net tomorrow while I'm at the game to increase our odds of seeing a win. If we lose on the road, I don't really care. But at home you want those wins and Cam increases those odds.

I'm saying Canes 4-3, in OT. #7 with the winner!

Was this in the Montreal game? I've missed the last two games due to several prior commitments, and I've seen this referenced a couple of times but didn't see it. I kinda want to, but it looks like it's not on Youtube...

Yeah, he got caught at the sideboards playing the puck with attacking players in the zone.
