He's the first habs coach I can remember. I was watching hockey at a really young age but don't remember watching a game with a coach prior to him, was before my time.

I'm watching video montages of Pat's career now and he cites winning the Stanley Cup in New Jersey as a crowning career moment. I'm sure he would have added induction into the HOF to the crowning jewels. It still amazes me how he was passed over. I wondered what corporate Bay Street execs made up the selection committee. To my amazement the selection committee is comprised of people who should have respected Pat's achievement and fast-tracked his induction.

Pat taught everyone how to die like a man, whenever our times up on the clock. I still don't know how he held on as long as he did..... RIP

IMO, Pat Burns was the Best Coach of the modern era after Scotty. He also almost re-joined the Habs before Carbo, I believe.

I've seen a lot of them , and Burns is right behind Bowman on my list.

In fact Burns could have been Bowmanesque in stature had he not coached in an age when the balance of power was shifting in favour of players. Scotty in his first reincarnation could run players into the ground, bench them, make them loath him and there was not much a player could do but perform. Burns had that way about him, but he also knew there was about a 12 inch difference between patting someone on the back and kicking them in the ass. He knew toughness was his strength but could keep loyalties alive only long enough to make his way through a 3 or 4 year contract.

Nice article in Toronto Sun on Pat Burns.

Pat Burns was a great man and a great coach. Lets keep this thread positive, he coached to win the Stanley Cup. He didn't coach to try get into the HHOF. So don't bash the HHOF because you want to be cool, honour the man with positive memories because for him, it was about one thing.

Its unfortunate that he didn't get to hoist the cup with the CH but at least he got to experience the greatest thing in hockey. That is what is important in hockey, the holy grail, not the HHOF.

The Bruins had a moment for Pat .

I watched the tribute that you had in Montreal...Well Done.

This is one place where even as rivals we are on the same page.

The hockey world lost a good one .
