Tortorella must alter backup plan

Brooks feels Torts should go with Biron while Lundqvist tries to get his game up to par. Henrik is the still the guy but it won't hurt to ride Biron who is playing better.

Quote:
So far, Lundqvist has not responded well on the ice to a rotation system. The workhorse has not hit his stride, and has yielded an alarming number of bad goals, including a back-breaker against the Bruins last Wednesday and three soft ones that got him pulled midway through the second period in Colorado on Friday. If Biron plays tonight, it won't be to give Lundqvist a rest.

If Biron plays tonight, it will be because the coach believes No. 43 will give his team the best chance to win; and, just as important, believes Lundqvist needs a couple of hard practice days with goaltending instructor Benoit Allaire to refocus and reclaim both his confidence and technique, which have come and gone with his aura.

The Rangers have 5 games in the next 8 nights. Tonight against Calgary. Get on a plane tomorrow and fly to TB. Game on Wednesday. Fly to Miami on Wednesday night/Thursday morning. Panthers on Friday and Preds on Saturday. Fly back to NY on Saturday night. Play Pitt at home next Monday.

Looking at that schedule, there is no time for any hard practices. They'll have a practice tomorrow. Practice on Thanksgiving. Two practices. They'll have a complete day off on Sunday after playing back to backs and then having a game on Monday.

Seems a bit reactionary. Lundqvist does need to get his head straight but it's not as bad as Brooks makes it out to be

Ehh...Just Brooksie writing an article for the hell of it. Is Hank going to lose his #1 spot? No, and will probably never happen anytime soon. I don't even think Brooks is trying to say Biron will take over Hanks #1 spot, but he is right, sometimes you ride the person who is playing hot.

It's a fact Biron has limited the opposition to two goals or fewer in six of his seven starts, while Lundqvist has limited opponents to two goals or fewer in six of his 15 starts. But that doesn't mean there's a competition for the No. 1 job. Or at least it shouldn't.

Biron was brought in to backup and relieve Hank of the 82 game grind. Supposedly, this was to help keep Hank rested for the games down the stretch of the season and playoffs. However, it seems this relief for Hank is not helping Hank get into his stride this season.

It's a long season.. I am sure Hank will be the consistent rock that he has been the last 5 years or so.

Its funny how everyone was praising Lundqvists play, saying he was hitting his stride not too long ago. He had 2 shutouts over the span of 4 games at the start of the month. Now all of sudden hes not responding well to the rotation, not hitting his stride.

I agree, hes let up some softies, but he hasnt exactly been torched lately, just letting up some crushing goals. He was sick for a week or so and that took a lot out of him IMO. I think hell be fine.. Would i start Biron more? I dont know right now. I would go right back to Hank tonight. He needs to start rolling.

Hes on pace to start 58 games at this point. He needs to play.

Because of one bad game? Total malarkey.

And yeah he let in a killer soft goal the game prior, but it was one that was a bit flukey as well in the way it squeezed through his arm and side. You can see it absolutely had shocked him. I chalk that up to a '**** happens' sometimes rule.

Henrik's still king and will bounce back just fine.

Did you guys actually read the article? Brooks never says that Lundqvist isn't the #1. In fact, he goes out of his way to say that Lundqvist is the #1 and is not at risk of not being the #1.

It's a fact Biron has limited the opposition to two goals or fewer in six of his seven starts, while Lundqvist has limited opponents to two goals or fewer in six of his 15 starts. But that doesn't mean there's a competition for the No. 1 job. Or at least it shouldn't.

The point is that it's still dumb.

When Mariano Rivera is going through a slump and everyone knows that he isn't necessarily the best option at that moment, the Yankees still put him out there.

That is the case because this isn't a video game. A player's psyche is important, as well as the team and how they perceive other players.

Why is the point dumb? Isn't the value of Biron that he allows Lundqvist to luxury of the time work through an issue?

The Rivera analogy is not applicable. He fills a specialty, niche role and there's no guarantee he's going to even appear in a game. That's not the same for a goalie.

Torts wants Biron to play an average of 4 games per month. Henrik can't play 70 plus games again.

Fine, apply the same concept to a starting pitcher.

Again, this isn't as simple as a video game where you just plug someone else in and there are no effects effects on a team. Every minor thing has to be considered because chemistry and mentality mean far more in sports than some people want to admit. If you even allow the perception that the coach may be having doubts as to who the best goalie on the team is, players take notice. If they lose a bit of confidence in Henrik, that takes effect on the ice.

There is a reason that sayings like "If you have 2 Quarterbacks, you have no quarterback" exist.

It makes sense to have Biron playing again tonight. we play 5 games in 8 days, tonight is vs a WCF opponent who is on the tail end of a back to back. We may even see Calgary's backup. Perfect condition to rest Hank.

He's on pace for 55-60 games this year and IMO I think that's perfect.

Has Lundqvist's confidence and technique really "come and gone"?

Or is he just tired from playing 3 games in 5 nights after returning from illness, including an emotionally draining win at Pittsburgh?

Henke may need some rest, but I don't think it's because he has little confidence or that his technique is no longer there.

As for Biron, he was good against Minny, but he didn't fare all that better than Henke in Colorado. The first goal he let in was very soft, he had the puck and it trickled right past by him.

Was about to ask the same question.

I don't know why people get so upset when Hank is criticized. Everyone knows he is still the number one, and if we are so confident in him then a stupid article by Brooks shouldn't get everyone's panties in a wad. Especially when he makes a decent point.

Yeah it may have only been one bad game, a bad goal in Boston and a few mediocre games otherwise, but that's what the point of signing a decent back-up was. To let Hank rest, or find his game when he had to. So what's the big deal here? If Biron sucks it tonight, Henrik will be right back in net for probably another 5+ games in a row. Unless they both start sucking it.

Not seeing the big deal here.

Torts says Hank is still #1. Starting Wednesday in TB. Will work with Benny Allaire on technique.
