Girardi is top 15 in NHL

That means Dan is way above average NHL D-man. I have never doubted that.

He has been this season, easily. 13 points, 1st in blocks, up there in hits. He's incredibly versatile and can play in a shutdown role.

You should have doubted it.... Girardi has never played this well for such a significant stretch of time and has battled consistency issues in the past (as have most players).... He's deserving of this status now, especially if he can maintain this level of play, but don't kid yourself about his past play....

Every D has consistency issues. I am positive he would have been much more consistent should Tyutin still be his pairing. He went through tough separation I'd say.

Prepare for the. Take it with a grain of salt blah blah blah the rangers stars crew ******** the stats blah blah blah biased on hits blah blah blah ******** girardi is one the most solid defensemen in the game right now, yes the name girardi isn't chara, pronger, kieth, doughty but girardi is one of the best at what he does which is play a conservative hard nosed all around well rounded game. He's reliable and he's a damn horse, yea his offensive numbers aren't stellar but that comes later hell finish with a respectable amount of points, granted he win the norris but he's a damn good defensemen.

Typical Ranger fans.

I'm just waiting for the mid-season two/three month slump to set in and all these comments become extreme setbacks.

Has a conventional non NHL favorite NHL defensemen ever won it? Cough (kieth, chara, pronger) Is probably the better question...

Doesn't every defensemen hit some sort of slump at some point? Girardi always finishes up strong I, I don't see his play dropping off to significantly.

Not really. In the 2000's, Norris winners are: Lidstrom (6x), Keith (1x), Chara (1x), and Niedermayer (1x).

Girardi shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as any of those players.

All are offensive D. There must be a trophy for defensive defensemen, like Dan. I'd call it Beuk's Trophy.

His point is moot. It's the correct way to go about things. These players are milestones ahead of a "Dan Girardi type player". Yes, points mean a lot.

Considering points = goals and goals win hockey games.

Not in argument there, we could use a trophy of that sort. But as for the Norris, I can't ever see a player like Girardi taking that one home.

In the past you had Rod Langway, who never put up a ton of points. But it seems that voters (hockey writers pick the Norris) have become entranced by stat totals.

Send a message via AIM to Bird Law
I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for him to string together a full season of consistency.

My friend and I have been saying for years that the Norris should go to defensive dmen, and they should create the Bobby Orr trophy for offensive dmen.

Langway.... Man, it was long time ago. I only heard about his greatness. All I recall he beat Richter in 1990 for a game winner in palyoffs. He could score, I guess.

If this Dan Girardi is the Dan Girardi going forward, that contract is a steal.

That feeds right into the fact that it's not always the best all around defenseman it's the league/fan favorite not the best defender. If girardi has a better +/- then pronger, more blocked shots, and hits but less points isn't girardi the better defensmen?

Lidstrom, Keith, Chara, and Niedermayer are all SO much more than offensive defensemen. They are elite all-around defensemen, and it's absurd that anyone would even think of putting Girardi on that level.

I love Girardi, and he's looking more and more like a legit top-pairing guy, but he's so far removed from these future Hall of Famers that it's not even funny.

Girardi has been underservingly hated by too many. He's taken it to the next level under Torts. I believe Eminger has played quite well under him too.

Scott Stevens never did and if he didn't Girardi doesn't deserve Norris considerations. Lets not kid ourselves, Girardi is playing well, but he's not a Norris candidate. Staal is a much better D than Girardi is.

Keeps his cap hit down, which is a good thing. Guys like Girardi are the best value in the NHL. Same with Staal...
